New animated film from Japan opening at the Balboa

This Friday, August 14, a special animated film opens at the Balboa Theater called PONYO. It’s from Japan and is directed by the world famous Hayao Mayazaki whose Oscar-winning films include Spirited Away, Prince Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro.

PONYO is very family friendly and ideal for all ages. Here’s a brief synopsis of the film:

From the Academy Award-winning director and world-renowned Japanese animation legend Hayao Mayazaki comes PONYO, a story inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Little Mermaid”. Already a box-office success in Japan, the story of a young and overeager goldfish name PONYO and her quest to become human features an outstanding roster of voice talent including: Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Frankie Jonas, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin, and Betty White.

Watch the trailer below and then check out the Balboa Theater website for showtimes. The Balboa Theater is located at 3630 Balboa at 38th Avenue.

7×7 Magazine also has a great interview with the film’s director, Hayao Mayazaki.
