4 Star vintage program

If you haven’t spent any time on the outsidelands.org website, I highly recommend it. Run by the Western Neighborhoods Project, it’s full of history and old photos of our neighborhood as well as other ones on the Western side of San Francisco.

Today I came across this photo of the June, 1946 program for the 4 Star Theater, which is still located at 23rd Avenue and Clement. The movie showing is “Leave Her to Heaven” which won an Oscar the year before and stars Gene Tierney and Cornel Wilde.

The ads are fun to investigate too. Where Heyman’s was located is now Bai Som Thai restaurant and Studio Art Shop is now Pacific Food Market.

The clip below shows the first 10 minutes of the film. I love the use of a book flipping pages for the opening credits! The next 10 minutes of the film can be seen here.

The 4 Star opened in 1912 and used to be called La Bonita Theater. Read more 4 Star history here.

  1. I hope by saying the “The colorization takes some getting used to,” you aren’t implying this was a black-and-white movie that was colorized. It was shot in Technicolor, and the movie’s use of color is one of its most memorable aspects. Especially the scene where Tierney gets all dolled up, red lipstick and all, right before she throws herself down a flight of stairs….

  2. Hi Movie Nerd – Busted! Yes, that was my impression as I guess I have not watched a lot of early Technicolor films. It’s brilliant. I will update the post. Thanks!
