Where do you dry your vegetables? (photo)

Photographer and neighbor Wolfgang Schubert snapped this pic of snow cabbage drying on a bamboo stick along someone’s front stair case. As Wolfgang points out, “the green-white steps made a nice color complement to the white-green of the Bok Choy leaves.”

Anyone know what this is in preparation for? A particular dish with dried cabbage in it?

  1. What is the material those steps are made out of called? I see it all over the neighborhood, and it’s in my apartment too. Does it have a name? I’ve been wondering.

  2. The dried bok choy will likely end up in a Chinese soup, made often for its health benefits.

  3. material on the stairs is called terrazzo.

My (chinese) grandmother lived in a golf course community in south florida. She decided to dry chicken parts in the veranda the same way.

suffice to say we got calls from the tenants association right away.

Didn’t matter that it was tasty and nutritious.

  4. I was walking on 16th towards Geary and saw some meat parts hanging out to dry…freaked me out a little bit but then I was fine =-). I love my diverse neighborhood!

  5. Ha, Larry, that is a funny story about your grandmother!
