Free July 4th Picnic at Muriel Leff mini-park

A few weeks back, I posted about a jop opening for a new park organizer for the Muriel Leff mini-park located on 7th Avenue. Good news! They found someone and the new organizer, Mikki Sulanchupakorn, is already off to a quick start, organizing this week’s 4th of July picnic.

The Community Picnic runs on July 4th from 12noon to 2pm and includes free food (60 lbs. of beef I’ve been told!) and activities for kids. This is a great chance to come out and meet your neighbors and enjoy a traditional 4th of July hotdog.

Mikki says they still need volunteers to help man the BBQ at the picnic, so if you know your way around a Weber, please get in touch: (415) 621-3260 or council@sfnpc.org.

Community Picnic at Muriel Leff Mini Park
Saturday, July 4th | 12noon – 2pm

7th Avenue between Geary and Anza (behind the Richmond Police Station)
Free!

Hear “War of Words” author Simon Read at Green Apple

This Wednesday, May 20 at 7pm, author Simon Read will be at Green Apple Books to talk about his new book War of Words: A True Tale of Newsprint and Murder. The book documents the scandalous beginnings of The San Francisco Chronicle.

More about War of Words from Simon’s website:

“In the San Francisco of the Old West, bad news was considered the best news and the term “circulation war” was literal. In this midst, Charles de Young—cofounder of the San Francisco Chronicle—launched his fledgling paper in 1865 intending to stay out of the fray. His impartiality wasn’t to last. With a nose for news and an ear for gossip, he promoted politicians he favored and lambasted those he scorned. Intent on cleaning up the rough and tumble city, de Young’s weapon of choice for ridding San Francisco of corruption was not sword or pistol, but pen.”

Green Apple Books is located at 6th & Clement.

Free admission to Academy of Sciences for Richmond residents

The annual Spring Free Days at the California Academy of Sciences are here! From May 15 through May 17, residents of the Richmond District can get in free (also for residents of Western Addition, Pac Heights, Laurel Heights and Presidio). If you live within the zip codes 94121, 94118, 94115 and 94129, you qualify.

To get in, bring proof of residence to the ticket window on any of the free days. Valid proof of residency includes:

  • Postmarked envelope, postcard, or magazine label with name and date
  • Driver’s license or ID card issued in past six months
  • Utility bill (gas/electric/cable), bank statement, or letter from a government agency that has your name and home address (not a P.O. Box)

Academy Free Days are also offered on the first Wednesday of each month to anyone, and our ‘hood will enjoy free admission again in the fall from October 2 – 4, 2009. For more information on the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, visit http://www.calacademy.org/.

While you’re there, don’t miss the new Super Falcon submarine that is on display.

My favorite part of the Academy is the multi-level rainforest; I just can’t get over those butterflies and all the activity that’s happening in there when you stop and really take a close look. What’s your favorite thing at the Academy?
