Greco does Bazaar-Stock 2

Along with nearly 30 other local musicians, the Richmond District’s David Greco played at the Bazaar-Stock 2 music festival on Saturday. Special thanks to Leasha LaBruzzi for taking and sharing the pictures.

From my interview with David last year, I know he is a big Beatles fan. It looks like he channeled a little bit of John Lennon’s classic style for the show. ;)

Did anyone stop by the Bazaar Cafe to hear the music on Saturday?

Free live music at Bazaar-Stock 2, Feb. 27

This Saturday marks the return of Bazaar-Stock, an all-day, acoustic music festival featuring local artists.

From 10am until 10pm, enjoy over 30 independent San Francisco arists at the Bazaar Cafe on California near 22nd Avenue (list of performers). On top of the great music, it’s free!

I attended last year’s inaugural show where I first heard Richmond District musician David Greco, and many other talented singers and songwriters. David will be hitting the stage from 1-1:45pm on Saturday.

The Bazaar Cafe is an intimate venue with great food too. So whether you want to camp out all day or just pop in for a quick bite and some tunes, I recommend checking it out.

Local musician Shane performs at Velo Rouge, Friday night

Richmond District resident and musician, Shane Papatolicas, has a show this Friday night at the Velo Rouge Cafe.

Shane first came to San Francisco in 2000 where he wrote and played music in a trio for a few years. In 2004, Shane’s friends pooled together $1200 to buy him enough studio time to record his first album, Going My Way.

San Fran Voice had this to say about his debut album: “Shane Papatolicas is one of those San Francisco musicians that captures the sound of California, infuses it with the life specific to San Francisco and tells it as a story through his own perception. And he’s a San Francisco musician that you should pay attention to.”

I stopped by Shane’s site where I listened to some of his music, including a hyper-local tune called “Sometimes on the 38″, a fun, lyrical reflection on life and his fellow MUNI passengers. Listen to it below:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Watch Shane peform “Daydreams” in the video below, and catch him in person at the Velo Rouge Cafe this Friday night at 7pm (798 Arguello at McAllister). Admission is free.

Richmond musician Rick Homan plays the Bazaar Cafe, Nov. 6

Local musician and music teacher Rick Homan (and friends) will play a set at the Bazaar Cafe on Friday night from 7-9pm. Admission is free and the cafe has tasty food and drink.

He’ll be playing one of his newer songs about the health care crisis, “I Can’t Afford to Go on Living,” live for the first time. And his wife, Ann Homan, will give the first public performance of another song by Rick, “Lost in Space.”

Rick’s compositions include jazzy love songs, topical satire and the occasional meditation on what it all means. Rick’s song-writing influences include Fats Waller, Tom Lehrer, Woody Guthrie and Randy Newman. Check out more of his work at RickHomanMusic.com.

Sharing the bill Friday evening will be Tom Stafford at the piano offering original songs, along with his back-up singers, The Alley Cats.

Below is Rick performing his latest tune, “Old Dude”, which is about, well, getting old. The Bazaar Cafe is located at 5927 California Street, between 21st & 22nd Avenues.

Russian Folk Music event at the Library, Oct. 27

On Tuesday night from 7pm-8pm, the Richmond Branch Library will host “Russian Folk Music, Old and New”, a program featuring singer Jonnie Pekelny accompanied by Toku Woo on guitar.

Born in the former Soviet Union and trained as a cantorial soloist, Pekelny brings a beautiful voice and special energy to every performance. Jonnie grew up singing the haunting, playful and soul filled melodies of the Russian countryside. By the time her family emigrated to the U.S. in the late seventies, she was hooked.

Jonnie has since participated and studied various musical traditions — from her classical music education at U.C. Santa Cruz, to her participation in a women’s World Music group. Throughout it all, however, she has maintained a special love for Russian folk music with its sweet, fiery, humorous, irreverent and honest songs of rural and working Russia.

In addition to collecting and performing Russian music, Jonnie currently sings with the Loose Canons, a Bay Area women’s World Music chorus.

Tuesday night’s event is free; the library is located at 351 9th Avenue. Below is a lovely performance from the Kremlin Capella group singing a traditional Russian folk song.
