Rolling through the Bay

Ok, this one isn’t specific to the Richmond but it was just too good not to share…

Back in 2008, Scott Weaver of Ronhert Park, CA debuted his 9-foot toothpick structure in tribute to San Francisco and Bay Area landmarks, entitled “Rolling through the Bay”. Aside from being amazing to look at and incredibly clever, the structure also has “roads” through it that a ping pong ball travels along. Check out the video below to see it in action (an even better video is here but it wasn’t embeddable). Be sure to listen closely – there are some fun momentos he embeds along the journey. See more pics here.

And check this out… The structure was made from toothpicks thrown at him and his wife (in lieu of rice) during their wedding. That’s a lot of toothpicks in there – how many times have you been married, Scott? 😉

Thanks to San Francisco Schtuff for the tip.

P.S. – Someone emailed asking if Scott’s sculpture can be seen somewhere today (sorry – your email didn’t make it through in the message!). I did a little research and it looks like it was on display at the “Root Division” Art Gallery, 3175 17th St. (At S. Van Ness) in San Francisco, from April 8-25, 2009. Note sure where it went after that but you might give the gallery a call to find out (415.863.7668, info@rootdivision.org). Here’s the article where I found that info.
