In case you didn’t get the flourescent green flyer on your door this week… This Sunday there is a free eWaste drop-off at Argonne Elementary School at 17th Avenue and Cabrillo.
This is a great chance to properly dispose of old printers, computers, fax machines, VCRs or that old tube television that got relegated to the basement when your flat screen moved in. 🙂
To participate, drop off your eWaste at the school’s side yard (on 17th Ave. btwn. Balboa and Cabrillo) from 9am to 2pm on Sunday. Workers can help you unload your items. Before you come, be sure to fill out the form to turn in, detailing what you’re disposing. This form is required if you want to drop off items.
The list of accepted items is below. Note that they DO NOT accept household appliances, vacuum cleaners, light bulbs, lamps or furniture. To search for recyclers who do take these items in the Bay Area, visit sfenvironment.org.
ACCEPTED ITEMS:
TVs
Monitors [CRT]
Flat-panel screens (LCD)
Computers: towers, desktops, portables
Computer parts and accessories
Laptops
Computer networking equipment
Printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners and typewriters
Cell/home phones and accessories, digital cameras, walkmans, PDAs, game consoles, home batteries

Happy recycling!

What do we know about the e-waste outfit that handles this event? We went last year and couldn’t see any confirmation that these materials were going to be recycled or disposed in a clean manner. Lots of e-waste simply gets loaded in containers and exported to countries without worker protection laws or hazmat enforcement. The Argonne outfit didn’t have anything to say about where materials were going. Can anyone tell me this isn’t a scam, albeit for a good cause?
Hi Rick – According to the flyer, the company handling the actual disposal is called ZARC (http://www.zarcnet.com/). They also have a page on their site that details what they do with the items they collect: http://www.zarcnet.com/resource.html
You can also contact them at zarc@zarcnet.com or 415-215-8059.
