I read a great book recently by a Rolling Stones fan who parlayed his handmade fan-zine into a job as the head of the band’s official fan club for many years.
Which brings me to this weekend’s Zine Fest taking place in Golden Gate Park, a free, annual two-day show for independent and underground publishers. The festival is full of small press, zines, comics and other do-it-yourselfers who are passionate about their subjects.
According to the Zine Fest website, there will be more than 100 small press and DIY creators, special guests, hands-on workshops, and informative panels. So no matter what you’re into, you’re sure to find a zine creator at the show that feels your passion.
The Zine Fest serves as a vital annual showcase of the diversity, vitality, and ongoing exuberance of the small-press movement. The exhibitors range from established small-press publishing houses to first time self-publishers and creators. Writers, cartoonists, crafters, illustrators, printmakers, and all manner of artists will be in attendance.
Special guests this year include Andy Hartzell of Fox Bunny Funny fame.
The Zine Fest will be held at the SF County Fair Building at 9th avenue and Lincoln Way (what used to be called the Hall of Flowers). Show hours are 11am to 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
