I visited the uber-fun Alameda Antiques Fair last Sunday and came across some vintage postcards of California landmarks. Amongst them were postcards for Sutro Baths, Sutro Heights, Golden Gate Park and the Cliff House. Check them out in the slideshow below or go here to see larger versions.
One of the postcards depicts the Donkey Path which was near the Children’s Playground. Included in the slideshow are a couple more old photos of the path from 1905-1906 that I found on the Bancroft Library website. It was in this area of the park that donkeys and goats gave rides to younger visitors.
A few of the postcards contain correspondence between a boy, Edward Robertson, who lived in San Mateo, and his Aunt, Miss Fitzpatrick, who lived on Waller Street here in San Francisco. I wonder if Auntie gave Edward a pack of San Francisco postcards so he would write her regularly? Postmarks from 1912 – 1915.

Love the postcards and especially the words to his aunt. Imagine the days when San Mateo was so distant that only a postcard would suffice to communicate with a nephew in San Francisco.
