The Examiner reports that Supervisor Eric Mar has been busy at the weekly Board of Supervisor meetings, recently proposing two resolutions in support of Richmond District landmarks.
The first resolution would put the Board on record in support of a lease extension for the 73-year-old Louis’ Diner at 902 Point Lobos Avenue above the Cliff House. Due to National Park Service guidelines, the restaurant operation is up for bid and review by a federal committee. The owners, the Hontalas family, will submit their own bid in late May that includes nearly $500,000 for renovations and a request for a multi-year lease.
Mar told the Board of Supervisors, “Many of you know the beloved Louis’ Restaurant that’s been there for 70 years. It was opened up on Valentine’s Day. It’s been a great experience to go to Louis’ and to see the most beautiful view of, I think, of within The City and have breakfast within a family-run restaurant.”
Resolutions are not legally binding, but are meant to send a strong message of support. The Louis’ Diner resolution “strongly urges the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to consider the importance of this cultural institution and the local family that has kept this San Francisco tradition serving loyal customers.”
Supervisor Mar also introduced a resolution to commemorate the 180th birthday of Adolph Sutro, a pivotal figure in the history of San Francisco, our 24th mayor, and the founding father of some of the Richmond District’s most famous landmarks, the Cliff House and Sutro Baths.
The resolution proclaims April 29 as the official “Day of Adolph Sutro.” Adolph Sutro was born April 29, 1830, and died August 8, 1898. He arrived in San Francisco in November 1851 and “history remembers Sutro as one of San Francisco’s finest citizens who became its first populist mayor in 1895,” the resolution says.
The Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on both the Louis’ Diner and the Adolph Sutro resolution at their April 27 meeting.
SFWeekly was unimpressed by Supervisor Mar’s actions, calling him “the Board of Supervisors go-to guy whenever they want to make a non-binding statement that will accomplish nothing.”

Well, I certainly hope Supervisor Mar accomplishes something this time with the Louis’ Restaurant resolution.
I’m not a big fan of Eric Mar or goofy BOS resolutions that mean nothing, but in this instance I support the resolution for Louis. Louis is one of the true family-friendly places in this city, and with high quality food. I don’t know the criteria the Park Service use, but a highest-bidder mentality is not what we need for Louis. Some horrible franchise could come in and make it their “flagship” location (think Denny’s) and lose money on it all year round just to get the publicity on a nationwide basis. Local interests need to be represented. Louis is a rare blend of a community-oriented local hangout and a national treasure. Changing it would be a crying shame.
So if a BOS resolution could possibly help with a lease renewal, I’m all for it.
I think there should be a separate day dedicated to Adolph Sutro’s chops.
Cool! Thanks supervisor Mar. Looks like you have had a busy week.
I am rooting for Louis’ Cafe. I love knowing that I can count on them for classic diner fare, just as generations of San Franciscans have.
I hope that this spurs a lil bit of freshening of their menu.
Nothing foodie, or trendy or anything like that, but, you know what I mean, yes?
