Odie, the elder cat that lived at Cal’s Pet Supply, passed away today. He was 22 years old.
If you’ve ever stopped in Cal’s Pet Supply at 22nd & California, you’ve likely given Odie a few pets throughout the years.
In his later years, he favored the upholstered perch in the front window where he got plenty of sun and visits from shoppers. No matter how he was feeling, Odie always had a purr ready.
Roy Schmall, the owner of Cal’s, found Odie in front of the store 22 years ago. SFWeekly had a nice writeup on Odie’s legacy, mentioning that he had a propensity for wandering into traffic and he didn’t meow, at least in Roy’s presence, until he was 18!
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Roy on his loss. Odie was our neighborhood’s elder feline statesman and he will be missed.

Thanks, Sarah for the post. As an animal lover yourself, I know you understand that heartfelt connection to the creatures around us. Indeed Mr Odie as others that have passed before him will be remembered fondly by those they touched. He was one of the mildest mannered cats, except of course, if you were trying to give him a pill!
Odie was a good cat. I certainly remember petting him when I would stop by Cal’s. Sorry for the loss, but sounds like he had a pretty good stretch there.
