In addition to (or as part of?) the Summer Gardening Fair that’s taking place this Saturday at the Botanical Garden, you can also enjoy some beginner birding programs.
On Saturday from 10am to noon, enjoy a leisurely naturalist-led walk through the micro-habitats of the garden to search for the California Quail and other birds that stop in to rest or nest. Cost is $10 for adults, children are free. Meet at the main gate at 10am, Ninth Avenue and Lincoln Way.
In a separate but related program, another birding program will be offered for kids age six to twelve years old. They’ll get a mini-class, exhibition and walking tour that highlights birds’ songs, beaks, bones, wings and more. Cost is $10 for accompanying adults, free for kids.
Happening nearby in the SF County Fair Building is Golden Gateway to Gems: In the Pink, the 56th annual show put on by the San Francisco Gem and Mineral Society. It features demonstrations of jade carving, wire wrapping, bead stringing and chain maille weaving. The show runs Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. $7 for adults, children 12 and under are free (print out this flyer for $1 off admission).
