Just got word that the group working on a Farmer’s Market for the Richmond District has decided on a location: the parking lot on 9th Avenue between Clement and Geary (across from the Richmond District Library).
The market will be held on Sunday mornings. Now that a location has been chosen, the group will move forward with choosing the vendors, establishing a kick-off date and making other decisions related to running the market.
The group hopes to open the market in early 2011, but could be sooner or later depending on how vendor selection and planning goes.
If you’re interested in joining the group that is working on the new Richmond District Farmer’s Market, check out their Yahoo! group. Their next meeting is planned for mid-September. In the meantime, they will likely begin outreach to residents and merchants near the 9th Avenue location.
And if one new farmer’s market isn’t exciting enough, another group is forming to bring a second market to the outer Richmond District, closer to 30th Avenue. This second location will also be discussed at the upcoming meeting in September.

The parking lot on 9th Avenue where the Sunday morning farmer’s market will be held.
30th Ave. Probably they mean to utilize Washington high school site for a farmers market.
That’s a nice lot for a farmer’s market. It must hold 50 or more cars (there are more slots in the upper left, out-of-view), which will be added to the cruisers on Clement looking for precious parking spaces on a Sunday morning. This isn’t a complaint….just stating the facts. (Go to Clement any Sunday morning to witness the madness).
Bus it out there, or go early, or park on Geary and take a little walk.
How exciting! I’ve been schlepping over to the Sunset for their farmer’s market, looking forward to having our own.
(And in the Sunset, they use a parking lot, too. Doesn’t seem to deter shoppers that they can’t park there for a few hours on Sunday.)
Sweet! Take out some books to read, buy some good fruits and veggies. I like it! 🙂
Yeah! This will be good for quality of life, and thus property values.
GREAT! WONDERFUL! PERFECT! LOVE IT! Just one thing…if you have 2 or 3 kids, maybe one an infant, maybe one in a stroller — and you wants to buy produce, exactly where are you going to PARK so they can attend? Oh, that’s right: a 6-month old, 2 1/2 year old and a 6 year old…and you’re supposed to ride the bus — or somehow get them all in baskets (along with the produce) on a bike.
The Progressive Agenda has it all figured out for everyone! (as long as you’re between the ages of 14 and 26 or so…)
Washington High parking lot might have been better. Or cut a deal with St. Monica’s for their lot…
@Fog Belt Baby – It’s mentioned in the article that a second farmer’s market at 30th Avenue is being worked on by the same group. You should join the Yahoo! Group if you want to help.

I live on Clement and 8th and I do think it’s wonderful, even if it displaces 50 cars.
That said, there are at least three schools within a few blocks of here. One on 8th between Clement and Geary, one on 7th between Clement and California, and one I think on 10th or so between Clement and California. I think all have parking lots, which are not available to the public normally. Would none of them be willing to offer up their space?
(As a side note, it occurs to me that the schools probably could make some money by making their lots into pay lots on weekends, and ease the jam for residents and visitors. I very specifically got a short car–only 8 inches longer than a Mini–and if I have to park it on a weekend, I’ll end up five or six blocks from home. I’ve even caved and parked at a meter for a couple of hours on a Saturday.)
NOT worried about parking. I’ve been avoiding the Sunset farmers market because I feel like the point of having one in your neighborhood is so you can walk there/take bus/get there easily. I’ll be walking and I’ll bring a wagon if I have to.
That’s the spirit, Maggie! 🙂 Yes, looking forward as well to being able to walk to this one. And in that parking lot, it should be out of the wind too.

Thank you, but I am already actively involved in two groups in the neighborhood…
Awesome! Really looking forward to this. I will support it with my $$ – much better than trekking down to the Ferry Building (too expensive) or trying to find good fresh stuff at Safeway.
If SFUSD is always looking for money, why don’t they use elementary school playgrounds on Saturdays for farmers markets? They are not being utilized. A small fee for vendors should cover the costs of paying a janitor to unlock gates. Better yet, why not the school principal.
