Miss Tilly honored today at City Hall; Johnny Mathis funds the GW High band

SFGate’s Leah Garchik was ON IT yesterday with news about the neighborhood…

Miss Tilly dances into the hearts of City Hall
Today at 3:30pm, District 2 Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier will present a certificate of honor to “Miss Tilly,” a.k.a. Tilly Abbe who has run the Ballet with Miss Tilly school on the corner of California and 17th Avenue for the past 35 years.

I’m sure many of you have driven or walked by Miss Tilly’s as girls bounce around outside in their pink tutus, waiting for class or to be picked up. The students that Tilly has taught over the years come from some of the most prominent families in the city, including Supervisor Alioto’s. More on Miss Tilly from a 2006 profile

Johnny Mathis has the GW band marching to a new tune
A little further out in the Richmond is George Washington High School, whose marching band (the city’s only public school marching band) has been struggling to raise $20,000 for new uniforms.

Their fundraising campaign got a big boost recently when famous alum and crooner Johnny Mathis contributed $5,000 to the cause. Mathis graduated from GW High in 1954 where he was a star athlete.
