Next Thursday night at 7pm, the Balboa Theater will premiere Pink Smoke Over the Vatican, a documentary about the movement to ordain women in the Roman Catholic Church.
The 64-minute documentary follows a group of impassioned women who have stepped forward to challenge the Vatican in their quest to become ordained as Catholic priests. Labeled as heretics, heroines, radicals, visionaries, feminists and fanatics, the film follows the candidates for priesthood as they confront their inner doubts and anxieties while at the same time challenging the centuries-old established order of one of the most powerful institutions in history.
After the film, Director Jules Hart and Victoria Rue, one of the women priests featured in the film, will answer questions from the audience. Director Jules Hart took on this project after being approached by a woman who was seeking ordination and felt this was a story that needed telling.
The screening begins at 7pm at the Balboa Theater, 3630 Balboa Street at 38th Avenue. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance online.
