SFFD rescues a man from the cliffs at Ocean Beach

That cliff at Ocean Beach? Not made for climbing.

Stoke Report posted some pictures tonight of a cliff rescue that took place at Ocean Beach today, just below the Cliff House.

According to Hugh who was on the scene, a man decided to try and climb the cliff but once he got up high, realized he was in a no-win situation.

Lots of emergency personnel were on the scene (“Good thing there wasn’t a fire in Inner Richmond,” Hugh says) and the fire department got the climber into a harness and down to safety on the beach.

  1. We almost had a Darwin Award winner, better luck next time.

  2. Quick – we have to spend 5 million dollars for a suicide barrier on those tempting cliffs.

  3. My dog jumped over that wall at the exact point where this idiot climbed down. Fortunately, the tide was way higher and after falling on sharp rocks, his fall was cushioned by the crashing waves. I was able to run down, swim out towards bird poop rock and fish him out. Instead of dying, my mutt that a stranger gave to me on the beach became an expensive dog (after they fixed the bone sticking out of his leg).

  4. oops. i take it back. after looking at the zoomed out picture, my incident was farther to the left, under the camera obscura.

  5. Nice work SFFD but I wonder if having more firefighters & vehicles responding to calls helps them ‘pad’ their stats (& budget). The day before yesterday about 4/5 engines plus a lifeguard truck and a couple of GGNRA ranger vehicles responded to what appeared to be one surfer/swimmer in trouble. Maybe that’s not the case but it makes you wonder.

  6. Nate, wow, that was a long drop for your dog. Glad to hear he survived. Why did he jump over the wall?

  7. Well Eric P… Isn’t it better to have all of the necessary resources and a little more on scene for a rescue? If you throw a large dinner party do you only have just enough food or would you have a little extra…just in case?

I know, you may feel the example is apples and oranges. But when it comes to saving someones life most would think that it is important to have the additional resources available. So your comment is excusable. You obviously don’t have and idea how rescue operations and logistics are performed.
