Red light runner causes fatal car crash at Arguello & Geary last night

Early this morning at around 2:15am, a man driving a black Audi reportedly ran several red lights on Geary Boulevard, finally colliding with a Mazda at the intersection of Arguello. The Mazda’s unidentified male driver was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

The 31-year-old male driver of the Audi was arrested and taken into custody. He was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Investigators were still on the scene at 6am this morning, and the eastbound lanes of Geary near Arguello remained closed to traffic until around 7:15am.

This afternoon, The Examiner reported that SFPD confirmed that the driver was intoxicated. “It’s a DUI,” police spokeswoman Lt. Lyn Tomioka said.

SFAppeal reports that the victim was identified by the medical examiner’s office as 57-year-old Leonid Stoliarov, of Pacifica.

  1. that would explain the helicopter at dawn.

hopefully this will lead to a crackdown on the latenight idiocy on geary blvd.

  2. I woke to the crash. It sounded bad. I wrote this:

    The Echo of Silence.

The deep silence of 3am sharply embraces sad despair as screeching tires, colliding metal, and broken glass leave silence bare and exposed, not sure where to go. Quieter and lonelier and more terrifying, the echo of silence holds the sound shattering glass long into an unsure fade.

  3. It would be nice if everyone would just take the cab or walk if they are intoxicated. After all, we do live in SF and have the luxury to use different public transports.

  4. There are no details yet until SFPD and Eric Mar release more information. An interesting comment on SF Gate:

“For all you people know, the guy driving the Audi had a stroke and the guy who got hit and died was a child molester.”

  5. just a block down the street, they are opening an all you can drink, karaoke, and beef joint. wonder what those drivers will be like at 2am.

@kanga, for all you know, the audi driver was a kangaroo. try milling about that intersection at 2am and you’ll get a clue where people are coming from.

  6. Such a sad thing to wake up to this morning. Can’t imagine what the victim’s family is going through right now. Glad the suspect was arrested.

  7. The Richmond District is obviously as sketchy as Bayview Hunters Point. District 1 has to resign to the very likely possibility that it is as dangerous as any other part of town. It won’t be long before there’s a few homicides here in 2011, and perhaps vehicular manslaughter qualifies. re: “try milling about that intersection at 2am and you’ll get a clue where people are coming from.”

People in the northwest sector need to quit being complacent. The Richmond District is full of crime. The more we deny that, the more Eric Mar sits around with happy meals.

  8. @serendipitous – Wow, feeling sunny today? 😉 I think you’re being overdramatic. This was a really unfortunate accident that was caused by a reckless man. To characterize the Richmond District as being as dangerous as Hunter’s Point is going overboard.

The RD police blotter always has news of muggings and theft in them – that is not unique to any sector of the city. The only reason that Bay City News reported that story today about a mugging was for the unique outcome that the woman actually got her stuff back. A mugging anywhere in the city is not unusual.

  9. I read that the victim worked at Cinderella. I hope everyone there is coping OK.
