Groundbreaking celebration for new Lands End visitor center, May 18

Next Wednesday night from 5:30pm until 7pm, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy will host a groundbreaking celebration for the new Lands End Lookout visitor center. Construction will officially begin on May 23 and is expected to open in late 2011.

The new 2,500 square foot center will also include 500 square feet of food service. A separate, 1,000 square foot building will house restrooms.

The center and restrooms will be built on a triangular patch of land on the south end of the Lands End parking lot along Point Lobos Avenue (just up the block from Louis’ Diner).

The construction of the visitor facility is made possible through a donation from the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund and the Goldsmith Foundation. Additional funds are provided by the National Park Service and Parks Conservancy members.

The groundbreaking event will take place in the parking lot at Merrie Way, beginning at 5:30pm. No RSVP needed – just show up and cheer for the new visitor center that has been a long time coming.

  1. Does anyone know of any web links showing what this thing will actually look like?

  2. @EricP – I have not been able to find any online but if you come across them, let me know! The small image in this post was the first rendering I’ve seen online.

  3. I think its pretty crappy to add food service after Louis just jumped thru all their hoops to upgrade. I seriously hope it is in no way any competition that will take away from profits Louis could be making to pay for those upgrades.

  4. I think it’s really short-sighted to object to one business on the grounds that another business could have competition. I think it’s just as likely that additional businesses would bring more visitors, some of whom would patronize Louis.

  5. I may buy into that if the Louis family didn’t have to struggle to keep the place in their family and at a steep price. I’d bet when they heard this they weren’t thinking “oh more biz for us.” Who knows , its just my opinion. Time will tell I guess.

  6. I think we’re talking about a snack bar/coffee counter in this new visitor center, nothing more serious. Probably similar to what the Warming Hut offers at Crissy Field.

Louis’ Diner should not see any negative effect on their business. As the center becomes more known, it will attract more tourists which is good for their business.
