Rat poison spread at Sutro Park, endangering animals

Several readers sent in the news today that someone spread unauthorized rat poison at Sutro Heights park over the weekend.

One reader was approached by a Parks volunteer who informed them that someone had spread rat poison at various points in the grass at the park, and that they should be careful with any children or dogs.

The volunteer went on to say that one of the park’s hawk residents had ingested it and was suffering an excruciating death up above in a tree. The volunteer said if they had been able to get to the hawk in time before he flew back into the tree he could have been treated with vitamin K to ward off death.

Park officials also fear that a local coyote may have been poisoned. Officials have warned park visitors to keep their dogs on leash and if possible, avoid the park altogether until the poison could be eradicated.

“My dog was foaming at the mouth and panting heavily on Friday after sniffing lawn area repeatedly, luckily, she is okay,” one reader wrote.
