CAPTAIN KEITH SANFORD’S MESSAGE
The Richmond Police District has been busy in the past couple of weeks. Our police officers have been successful in making contact with numerous parolees resulting in their arrests for residential and vehicular burglaries. We’ve been instrumental in the reduction of crimes as a result of these arrests and the officers being proactive. I do appreciate all the community and business members calling the police when they observe suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.
Our officers responded to the area of 600 Funston Ave on 10/03/2011 around 7:20am on a call of a stabbing. Responding officers made contact with the victim who was outside the home and bleeding from his hands and arms. This victim informed the officers that his son had stabbed him and he was inside the house. Officers immediately investigated the crime which resulted in locating a second victim. Officer rendered aid to the second victim when they were confronted by the suspect who was armed with two knives. Non lethal and lethal force was used to subdue the suspect who had stabbed both his parents and his attempt to assault with the knives, SFPD Officers. Both the mother and suspect were transported to SFGH where they were pronounced dead.
The Chief of Police, Greg Suhr held a community meeting on 10/04/2011, 6:30pm at the Richmond Rec. Center ,
with Police Commission President T. Mazzucco, Commissioner A. Chan and Supervisor E. Mar, to inform citizens of the district as to the circumstances of the stabbing and officer involved shooting. Chief Suhr has been extremely interactive with the communities throughout the city, discussing issues relating to police actions and activities.
As a result of the stabbing incident on Funston Ave. , I will have a representative from D.P.H. Crisis Response Team to outreach to community members who desire to have information and contact numbers to assist them in mental health concerns at our Police Community Relations Forum (PCRF) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 7pm.
Our recent concert, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass was held over the Sept. 29-Oct. 02, 2011 in the Golden Gate Park. It was the largest attended event since the inception of this concert. I hope to have representatives from Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Rec & Park, MTA, Richmond Station Police Advisory Board and Richmond Station Police Staff, at our PCRF meeting on Oct. 18, 2011 at 7pm to discuss the positive and negative concerns relating to this venue as there were many.
Due to concerns and complaints during the evening hours along the Geary Blvd. and Clement St. corridors
nightclubs, we’ll be conducting enforcement operations to evaluate and enforce violations of the law. We are looking at the owners of these properties to provide an increase of security to assist in dealing with noise, fights and intoxicated individuals who patronize these establishments.
The recent promotion of Richmond Police Station night watch Sergeant S. O’Leary to the rank of Police Lieutenant was an excellent selection for the SFPD. Lt. S. O’Leary will attend management training then he’ll be assigned to a new police station in the city of S.F. As a result of the transfer of Lt. O’Leary, Chief Suhr transferred Sgt. Dempsey to Richmond Police Station. Sgt. Dempsey is a past Tactical member of the SFPD and he has many years in plainclothes experience. Sgt. Dempsey’s addition to our staff is an asset to our company. One additional police officer was transferred to Richmond Station in the past week and we anticipate two additional officers in the next few weeks.
