More men showing up to yoga classes, a.k.a “Broga”

CBS News recently aired a story about “Broga”, a new trend where an increasing number of men are popping up in yoga classes. What was once considered a “chick” workout is now gaining popularity among real men – including some ex-military who are featured in the piece.

So much so that it’s inspired its own moniker – “broga” – with an accompanying website that describes it as “a yoga class geared for men (where it’s okay if you can’t touch your toes). Strong, energetic, and challenging, Broga combines the best core-strengthening, muscle-toning, cardio-working, stress-reducing, clarity-enhancing yoga postures with functional fitness exercises for an amazing workout.”

The news story visits our own Richmond District YMCA (18th Ave. near Geary) and Bikram Yoga Sea Cliff (25th & California), both of which offer yoga classes in the neighborhood.

Bikram Yoga Sea Cliff offers a variety of classes at least six times per day (schedule); you can purchase individual classes or get a membership. I’ve taken one of their classes – it’s no joke! But the studio is very welcoming to both beginners and advanced yoga-heads.

The Richmond District YMCA offers a 90 minute hatha yoga classes once a day (schedule), and classes are included with the price of a YMCA membership.

It’s unclear from the story whether Bikram Sea Cliff or the YMCA are really tailoring (broga-ing?) their classes to men, but they both claim that more and more are showing up to classes.

Perhaps this will become the “Real men eat quiche” catchphrase du jour – Real men do yoga. Er, we mean, Broga.
