RichmondSFBlog reader Derek was walking on 5th Avenue yesterday afternoon when he heard an odd sound – quacking. He looked up and saw a mallard duck perched on an apartment building roof, just taking in the view. Guess he was taking a field trip from his digs in Golden Gate Park or Mountain Lake Park…
Derek has a knack for capturing our feathered friends in the neighborhood. He also snapped the red-tailed hawk that stopped to check out the Clement Street scene back in February.

That’s interesting. I wonder if this is a seasonal thing. Last year around this time we had 3 web-footed friends chillin’ in our carport…

Thanks for sending in great pictures Derek!
It’s really something to me how much wildlife Golden Gate Park (and other parks in San Francisco) evidently sustain, based on the numerous sightings of various birds and animals reported within this blog. I particularly find the blue herons that nest at Stow Lake to be so cool. I’d love to take that guided blue heron progam that San Francisco Nature Education hosts to espy them for myself sometime.
