Local links: Pride Nightlife, brunch spots, new Ramen spot, Cliff House turbines

We were on vacation for about a week, so here are some lingering links that we overlooked to fill up your Tuesday:

  • This Thursday’s NightLife at the Academy of Sciences is rainbow colored in honor of Pride Week here in SF. Check out a drag performance and “tranimal” costume contest with Heklina of Trannyshack, “Stargayzing” in the planetarium, hear tales of sex-changing fish, plus all the usual fun of Nightlife like DJs and bars. See the full schedule of events
  • B Star (127 Clement) and Velo Rouge (798 Arguello) were mentioned as good under-the-radar brunch spots by 7×7. “B-Star’s Asian-inspired brunch is what really makes her twinkle”. At Velo Rouge, “come for the breakfast burrito with black beans, bacon, and avocado, and stay for the Blue Bottle.”
  • The modern looking Oozora restaurant couldn’t hack it at 5120 Geary and now it looks like a Japanese ramen chain, Men Oh Tokushima Ramen (A Ramen Revolution!) will take a swing at making it work. Eater SF reports there’s “major demo” going on at the space and their website says they’re opening in June.
  • Blog reader Jon tells us that the former Angelo’s Cafe space at 2314 Clement near 24th is showing some life after it closed in April. He saw some people inside “sprucing the place up with a new paint job and possibly a bit of renovation.” If you know more, let us know!
  • Sick of the Beach Chalet soccer fields debate? Expect it to drag on longer as opponents of the turf field plan will appeal to the SF Board of Supervisors. The Recreation and Park Commission and the Planning Commission approved the project on May 24 after a lengthy EIR period. But there’s more debate to come…
  • The Cliff House gift shop may soon be self-sufficient with its energy needs, thanks to a wind turbine that the National Park Service wants to install on the building. Ocean Beach Bulletin reports that testing could begin as early as July 1. Comments are due in to the Park Service by June 25. More from SF Examiner View the fact sheet
  • Scoutmob captured a nice collection of San Francisco-themed tattoos that they found around town. The Golden Gate Bridge is definitely the star but there are some clever ones depicting other notable icons.

  1. Too bad some people think the the Beach Chalet artificial turf/nightlights issue has gone on for too long. Sorry, but that’s how things work in our democracy. And thank heaven for that. This project should never have seen the light of day. There are too many things wrong with it to list here..so I’ll just hit the hilites: GGP is an international treasure that is intended to provide a “sylvan and pastoral retreat;” artificial turf with tire crumb infill is toxic; night lights will irreparably damage the local wildlife and the night sky; according to the Environmental Impact Report, the impact on that part of the Park as an historical resource will be significant and cannot be mitigated; Rec and Park hasn’t a clue how they’ll recycle the artificial turf.

And, most important, there’s a great Hybrid Alternative that will provide just as much play time and keep the parkland as it was meant to be…parkland. This alternative would renovate the fields in West Sunset with artificial turf that isn’t toxic and suitable lighting for evening lay, while also renovating the fields in GGP with natural grass and no lights. The Park remains as it should, and the soccer fields get moved to West Sunset playground, already a developed recreational area. Read all about it at

  2. Sarah, I’m curious what you mean by “sick of the Beach Chalet soccer fields debate”? I am sick of it, sick that developers can push their own agenda down our throats and pave over any and everything. I’m sick of hearing people being snarky about the debate over land use, especially when natural space in our world is rapidly disappearing. I’m sick of privatization happening all around us, and folks buying the “good for us” rhetoric without thinking. I’m sick of reporters with a pro-developer/anti-community bias.

  3. I’m all for the soccer fields development, and I love the city more than anyone else. I hope they build it soon!!

  4. It’s great that the Cliff House wants to use renewable energy, but why wind turbines instead of solar panels. While turbines are better than non-renewable sources such as oil or coal, the turbine is unattractive at this beautiful location. Was solar considered? If so, why was it not chosen. If it wasn’t considered, why not?

  5. Jean- stop being such a NIMBY hypocrite San Franciscan. We can’t have renewable energy because Jean thinks its unattractive? I think wind turbines are cool and beautiful to look at.

  6. Tyler, I’m not being a NIMBY hypocrite. I said I support alternative energy. It’s just that if there’s a choice between a wind turbine and solar power, why not choose the one that’s the least intrusive?

  7. If this area gets better kWh with wind than solar, due to the abundance of wind and lack of sunshine, then why would you not choose wind over solar?

  8. Both solar and wind are intermittent renewables. However, this area has ongoing cold and warm air mass collisions, which create the sea and land breezes experienced at Ocean Beach, day and night. Additionally, depending on the number of kWh needed, the solar array would be quite large and would probably be raised on the flat roof portion of the Cliff House for seasonal tilting. This would likely be visible and take up more of the view than a single turbine. Finally, a turbine can provide energy at night and during days of heavy cloud cover and fog when radiant energy is reduced.

  9. I would say I’m sick of the Beach Chalet/Soccer field debate.

Not so much the issues or the ideas involved. It’s more accurate to say I’m sick of people getting aggressively emotional over their own narrow-minded political interests.

Smart-headed Tyler and Matt, who is possibly the only person in the world who cares about our community. You’re hollow men. And I wish I could control myself and not post but. Please don’t mock or attack other people who have vision and ask questions just because you know you’re right.

    Sincerely,
    the internets
