Some of you may have heard a helicopter buzzing over the outer Richmond this morning around 9am. They were hovering over a gas leak that was under repair on 25th Avenue between Geary and Clement.
PG&E, SFFD and SFPD were on the scene of the leak, and shut down the street while the repairs were being made. The leak was in a 2 inch gas line under the street.
ABC 7 News reports that the leak began around 8:05am after a third party contractor hit the line during excavation work.
Crews had the ground opened up and the leak capped by 8:49am. By 9:30am, they were packing up their equipment and planning to re-open the street.

The Chron and the link to ABC reported that the leak was at 438 26th Ave. Apparently, some small-scale evacuations occurred too.
@mel – Well I was standing on the corner of 25th and Clement when that picture was taken, and drove up 26th Avenue afterwards which was not closed. So I think the Chron and ABC got it wrong this time. 😉

Oh, I believe ya. The news sites were just reporting what the PG&E rep said. But then again, PG&E is not always renown for its accuracy :).
WOW! This is very scary to me as I live on this block and can see my apartment building in the picture. I wasn’t informed at all this occurred and was sleeping at the time of the incident. I’m just thankful everything got taken care of.
So I woke up this morning at exactly 7:00 am to my alarm clock, on 24th street, one block over from this. At almost the exact same time I heard what I thought was a massive dumpster being dragged around or something heavy and metal being dragged on the ground. This went on for about an hour or so, maybe less, and I quickly figured out that they were doing some construction work nearby…and then it stopped. I figured they had been tearing up asphalt or something for some reason.
As I walked to the bus stop on 25th and Geary I saw that street blocked off with a bunch of fire trucks…and I could smell gas. I put two and two together and it looks like I was right.
