Reader John D. sent us this pic he took of some brave souls taking a dip at Ocean Beach on New Year’s Day. What a way to start the year!

To try to patronize more the sorts of neighborhood places I like and would like to see more of — in my case, Cafe Europa and Chomp N’ Swig.
Good one alyxandr – I’m with you on that!

We ate at Cafe Europa last night and will not need to go outside our neighborhood anymore for great beer and schnitzel! And Chomp n’ Swig has been a blessing to our neighborhood, glad we only live 2 blocks away. Love the way things are going around here with the new businesses. Healthy Spirits opening soon! Swamp has excellent Cajun boiled shrimp!
Anyone have any knowledge of what’s going into the Video Cafe spot? So curious to know!
I heard that the Video Cafe is going to be a Chinese place that (if I remember, correctly) will be specializing in dim-sum during the day, and fish in the evening (or some variation of that). It will have to be pretty high end, because the rent on that place will be enormous. Hong Kong Lounge may feel the competitive heat from this place, if it turns out to be any good.
I still think we need business permitting that keeps the density of certain kinds of businesses at a reasonable (to be defined) level. Many cities do this. I hate to see so many small businesses (especially restaurants) that are tiny variations of one another. Inevitably, this means that many will die off, resulting in vacant storefronts. We are over-saturated with Chinese restaurants.
In any case, I wish the new restaurant well, and hope they can make a sustainable business.
