Mountain Lake Park is undergoing a lot of changes. A new restroom is being finished, the lake is being cleaned out, and park groups are working towards a $3.15 million playground renovation that will begin in March 2015.
Next month, the Presidio Trust is hosting two free “Science Saturday” workshops, where the public is invited to come learn more about the ecosystem of Mountain Lake, one of the few remaining natural lakes in San Francisco.
Saturday, July 6th | 1pm-2pm
Mountain Lake Underground and Underwater: The History of Mountain Lake and its Environs
Join archaeologist Kari Jones to learn about the ongoing research into the cultural and natural history of Mountain Lake. She will discuss results of limnological coring of lake sediments that took place prior to dredging and what this research can tell us about the formation of the lake and the prehistoric environment. She will also discuss what is known onhealthy celexa citalopram about the Native Ohlone occupation of the Presidio and the Spanish Colonial settlement that followed. By presenting the geological, limnological, archaeological and historical data, she will summarize what is currently understood about the lake along with the many questions that remain unanswered.
Saturday, July 20th | 1pm – 3:30pm
The Lichens of Mountain Lake
Shelly Benson, president of the California Lichen Society, will explain what lichens are and show some examples of various lichen structures, then lead an exploration of the lichen habitats of Mountain Lake, talking about where to look for lichens, lichen ecology, and why lichens are important.
Workshops are free to the public, and meet on the lake beach, below the playground which can be accessed at Lake Street and 12th Avenue.
