Check out the new murals on the front of Green Apple Books

If you’re like me, you may not look *up* very often when you’re walking down Clement Street, so you probably missed the new murals that are on the front of Green Apple Books.

The new murals, which include some San Francisco landmarks, as well as a depiction of Adam and Eve under the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, was painted by local artist Bryana Fleming.

Green Apple Books owner Pete Mulvihill explains the inspiration for the mural: “The store’s name is derived from the Adam and Eve story – in picking the apple, they chose knowledge over utopian bliss. Hence the Adam and Eve theme. Beyond that starting point, it was Bryana’s creation.”

Mulvihill says the project was also supported by the San Francisco Arts Commission and Supervisor Eric Mar’s office.

Fleming has also painted murals at many other locations in the Bay Area including four Trader Joe’s stores, Presidio Heights Playground, the Bayview neighborhood, and works for the Mural Music and Arts Project.

Green Apple will host a special ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new mural on Wednesday, July 17 at 6pm. Supervisor Mar, artist Bryana Fleming, and the Green Apple team will be in attendance. All are invited!

  1. Hi Jerry.
Believe me, the mural is not intended to be religious in any way. Indeed, the store takes it name from the myth of Adam and Eve choosing knowledge over paradise. I hope you can see past the Biblical reference to the store’s intention of broadening, not narrowing, access to ideas, knowledge, beauty, etc.
    Cheers.

  2. I love it when the Richmond gains some much needed character – Bryana did a beautiful job! And thanks for being the best (and my favorite) bookstore in the Bay Area! (I didn’t find it religious at all!)
