On June 3, Cabrillo Playground reopened after a $4.5 million remodel that included the renovation of the historic clubhouse, a complete overhaul of the children’s play area, resurfaced sport courts, a new picnic area, repaved paths, new lighting, improved accessibility and new landscaping.
SF Rec & Park shot some video of the pirate-themed grand opening celebration – check it out above. The park and its neighbors have never looked so good!
Now if we could just get Commissioner Buell to pronounce “Cabrillo” (:44) correctly… 🙂

No sand or dirt, lots of shiny plastic. Good. Let the sterilization of our kids continue
Is there a special needs swing? We live on 26 and Cabrillo, my daughter loves to swing but her disability makes it difficult for her to sit up and hold on in typical swings. Our newest and closest park on 28 has typical swings only. We have to go to Dolores park or childrens playground to use their special needs swing. That’s a far distance to travel.
What’s wrong with Commissioner Buell’s pronunciation of Cabrillo street? I’ve often heard of it pronounced as “Cabri-low.” Can someone please clarify?
Look at post #1 and #13. It seems both pronunciations are correct.
The Cah-Brillo/Ca-breeyo issue has to do with Juan Cabrillo’s questionable nationality. It is accepted that he was Portuguese and Cah-brillo is the Portuguese pronunciation. (Actual spelling would have been Cabrilho.) However, there are those who believe he was Spanish and so Ca-breeyo would be appropriate. Either way is technically correct. Even in San Diego it gets pronounced both ways.”
$4.5 million???????
How long might the playground last before it needs another remodel – 10 years? That is a cost of $1,200/day plus operating expenses! How many kids might might use it each day – 100? You probably would not $12 a day to use this park… not sure why the rest of us need to pay for it too.
Congratulations to all the hard-working residents of the outer Richmond who helped plan the new plaground and worked with Rec and Park every step of the way to create this beautiful playground. It’s a beautiful addition to the neighborhood, and a wonderful, safe place for kids of all ages to play. And Devi’s dahlia garden is spectacular.
It’s a beautiful playground, but I don’t understand how the renovation can cost anything close to $4.5 million.
To put in perspective, it’s a price of 4-5 houses on this block (much more complex structures, obviously), with the land they are built upon.
Doesn’t make any sense to me…
Moscone playground in the Marina has a special needs swing, but you have to go there doing hours the clubhouse is open if you need the attachments to hold your child in. If your child doesn’t need to be strapped in, the fiberglass chair swing is located next to the bucket swings. But still quite a trek from you.
The city’s politics are such that achieving a high quality product at free market driven low cost are not the highest priority. That said, the renovated playground looks great! Props to those outer richmond residents who helped the city design it and raise funds for special features.
