Mike L. sent us this video of him and a buddy paddleboarding from Fort Point to Ocean Beach recently. Along the way, they met up with some Grey whales (and frolicking dolphins too).
My bud and I paddle boarded from Fort Point, San Francisco to Ocean Beach. We had the pleasure to have some beautiful video of Grey whales playing in Kelly’s cove. Watch til the end where there is a whale encounter 🙂
The viewing gets good right around the 2:15 mark and an amazing up-close-and-personal breech at the 3:20 mark.

The paddleboarders spoke with KTVU about their encounter:
FANTASTIC!!!
A great encounter, plus the offshore perspective on our familiar rocks, Mile Rock lighthouse, the Bridge and other landmarks is really neat. While I think there are laws against getting within xx yards of marine mammals, there are no laws about them coming within xx yards of YOU.
saw some white knuckles there! a little too close for comfort.
following or approaching any marine mammal can be considered harassing them which IS ILLEGAL.
i think you boys could be cited for this according to the video. may want to think twice before you follow whales. seems mamma whale was sending a pretty clear message. the baby “periscoping” was checking you out. but following or getting between mama and baby is not the smartest idea.
Cool. I like seeing what it looks like while paddle boarding, since I wouldn’t have the nerve to. It’s beautiful out there.
Didn’t look like they were following the whales, just hanging out on their way to the beach.
Yo, forreals this kind of pisses me off. Give them some space, bro. You are defo harassing them. — surfchick
Compelling video. I think I’ll head out to Ocean Beach with my binoculars.
