SFFD responded to calls of two people stranded off the cliffs of Lands End on Thursday around 12noon.

Firefighters found a 27-year-old man who had fallen down the cliff about 200 feet, and a woman in the water, 300 feet below. Crews were able to perform a rope rescue for the man who had fallen.

The woman was found unresponsive when rescue swimmers got to her, and later pronounced dead.

She has been identified as 26-year old Randi Salmon from Seattle. Her male companion suffered scrapes and bruises in the incident.

The two were on the cliffs near the Painted Rock area, located at the bottom of the stairway at about the midway point of the coastal trail at Lands End.

“People have walked along those routes and fallen to their death,” Fire Captain and Paramedic Sebastian Wong told KTVU, noting the couple had to cross a fence and ignore bold signs, warning of the extreme danger on the steep cliffs of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
