Happy Monday everyone! Here are some local links to kick off your week…

  • The Clement Street Farmer’s Market is looking for a new Assistant Marketing Manager. Duties include: setup and break down of farmers market, staff the information booth, serve as a resource for both farmers and customers. Hours are Sunday’s from 6am until 3:30pm; must be capable of regularly lifting 50 pounds. $15 per hour, 6 month commitment required, year commitment preferred. To apply, send cover letter, resume, and list of references to dana@agriculturalinstitute.org.
  • Free flowers at the Farmer’s Market: Our Sunday farmer’s market is also offering a free bunch of flowers to shoppers. Download & print this coupon and bring it to the Thomas Farm booth at the market. Good through August July 31, limit one per customer. [Update: A reader tried to redeem it on Aug. 2 and was told it had expired (even though coupon says “Expires August, 2015”). Sorry, folks]
  • There’s a new way to commute for downtown workers starting this week. Chariot’s Richmond Racer commuter van line now runs eastbound in the mornings, with pick-ups at 4 stops along Geary, and 2 along California from 6:30am-9:30am. The company’s van will drop you off at a variety of downtown locations from the financial district to South of Market. Vans come back in the evening between 4:30pm and 7:30pm. Rates per ride average about $4.
  • There’s a new Asian fusion restaurant called Red Lantern on the corner of Geary and 22nd Avenue. It’s in the former space of Gastronom, a Russian market. So far the restaurant has a 4.5 star review on Yelp and the menu features Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Thai dishes. Open Tuesday through Sunday.
  • One candidate has already announced her candidacy for District 1 Supervisor in the next election (Fall 2016). Marjan Philhour wants to be the first Filipino American to be elected to San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors. “I see opportunities for us to prioritize clean, safe streets and creating housing options that are affordable for working families,” she states. “As a local business owner myself, I understand the importance of delivering each day, and I intend to do so for residents of the Richmond as supervisor,” Philhour told the Inquirer.net.
  • The Americana Grill on Balboa near 36th has long been known for its wide ranging menu of American, Italian and Vietnamese (“No where else can you order authentic Southeast Asian spring rolls for appetizer, heartyseafood pasta fro an entree, and beef noodles soup, while your buddy next to you has a Philly cheese steak and fries” they say on their website). But now it appears they’ve divided their space to make way for a new neighbor – April Calf (odd name, we’re still noodling that one over…). Their new awning says “Fusion Food – Dessert – Drinks” and the website is still under construction; it’s unclear when they’ll open for business.

  1. Interesting that the Richmond Racer Commuter Van is showing a path on its web site going inbound in the AM with a left turn from Eastbound Geary to Northbound Arguello Blvd. Last time I looked that is a no left turn.

  2. Red Lantern is in the old Gastronom space – a small Russian market.

I’m excited about the free flowers at the Farmer’s Market – those are the guys I always buy my flowers from.

  3. I went to Red Lantern once so far. A tasty bibimbap for $9.

  4. Thanks, Rachel! Couldn’t tell what that space was by the sign on Google Maps 🙂

  5. You’re welcome, Sarah!
That restaurant looks tasty, I’ve walked by it a few times.

  6. I miss Praha Deli. Gastronom was ok until they got busted selling poached sturgeon.

  7. Great that someone is running for Supe who is obviously attentive to safe streets/speeding and clean neighborhoods. Aesthetics and street safety are our biggest problems as a nabe, IMO.

  8. Any word on the 6th and Balboa construction next to Melissa’s? Permit on the door is for a new restaurant and it looks like they are building a bar inside 🙂

  9. Re: The candidate for Supervisor – Does anyone want to venture a guess as to why there seems to be more and more street trash, lately – not to mention the large items left on corners and at bus stops? I am having a hard time figuring out what is going on – just picking up garbage constantly in our neck of the woods.

  10. @ Scott: My thought is that the street trash and large items are left by people who are getting kicked out and/or priced out of their apartments. That and landlords are fixing a lot of places up for higher rents, i.e. throwing out a lot of old kitchens, etc.

  11. @ Richmondwow: That has been one of my theories, too. Which means it might eventually stop, or slow down. I think some people have the idea that it’s ok to do, because it’s done so often, too.

  12. I find the street trash to be seasonal, often when college students move. It has also increased since Recology (formerly Sunset Scavenger) stopped the annual free pickup by area and replaced it with one pickup per ratepayer billing address per year that requires a lot of paperwork and no toxics and recyclables eligible for blue bin.

  13. 4THGENRICHMOND – Do you miss the free-for-all that occurred twice a year during the free cleanups? Personally, I don’t miss the cars, trucks and scavengers all night long…..

  14. @ 4THGENRICHMOND: I’m also just talking about napkins, paper towels, promotional flyers, soda and coffee cups – that sort of thing. There seems to be a lot of it and I have no idea where it’s coming from.

  15. Scott, The small detritus is common in non-western countries (except Singapore) and has increased as the population demographic has changed to include more non-westerners and youth from overseas attending colleges. I do have the college police coming to my block somewhat regularly due to a house of college boys (rented from an elderly couple who can no longer do the stairs) who like to start partying at 1AM and I live many blocks from that college.

Richmondman; I do miss the convenience of Garbage Amnesty day and meeting up with neighbors who help haul out the heavy stuff for their older neighbors but I do not miss the mosquito fleet. Wish the bureaucracy for cleaning up periodically was reduced. Amold enough to remember Sunset Scavenger having keys to tradesman doors and emptying cans in the backyard onto burlap sheets and carrying those out the tradesman door. No cans on the sidewalk back then.

  16. I went to the flower market yesterday with my coupon at around 10:00am and the salesperson said the coupon expired. No free flowers!

  17. Chariot’s private vans are clogging up the 31/38 AX/BX stops downtown. Chariot does not have any permits for using Muni stops. Chariot drivers idle in tow-away bus zones and often block Muni buses. Last week a Muni driver had to get out of the bus to talk to the Chariot driver who wouldn’t respond to honks or people waiting on the sidewalk. Chariot is clogging up the sidewalk with double sandwich boards at Muni stop signs, and disrupting the express bus lines.
