Timber!! Reader @cassfung snapped this pic of a downed streetlight and pedestrian countdown signal at the corner of 20th Avenue and Geary this morning.

Thankfully no one was injured and city crews have been alerted.

UPDATE 8/20/15: KTVU News aired video footage of a Recology garbage truck striking the pole and knocking it down. We’re seeing if we can track it down.

  1. Didn’t a lamp post fall on 16th and Geary – opposite Peet’s – a few years ago and hit a car? The postal relay box still has a huge dent in the top.

  2. I drove through that intersection this morning and the stop lights were blinking, very slow traffic. I couldn’t see any problem but there was probably a truck blocking my view of the downed traffic light. Based on the picture it doesn’t look like it was struck by a vehicle. Maybe the Richmond District elves are restless? Thanks for enlightening us with the coverage.

  3. sfgate now mentions this in the earthquake story, placing the intersection at Geary and 20th _Street_

For close to 200 years, Geary has never crossed a Street.

  4. That’s the Southwest corner. The market there has a camera on an exterior wall (20th ave side) aimed right around that spot. I wonder if they have video footage of what happened.

  5. A KTVU reporter tweeted that a Recology SF garbage truck driver hit it.

  6. @Mel

Makes sense that it could have been hit by a garbage truck. There’s an obvious scratch on the pole but it’s too high up for it to be from a regular car or truck. Makes sense that it was a garbage truck. I can now rest easy that the elves have not gone on a warpath.

  7. SFPD Richmond Station is handling this as a hit & run investigation

  8. This was a block and an half from my house. We now have a new, neato, spiffy, and much larger signal light there.
