Around 2:15pm on Christmas Eve, a large eucalyptus tree fell over on the southeast corner of California and Park Presidio.

In what could be considered a Christmas miracle, no pedestrians or cars were harmed when the tree fell, which covered the sidewalk and part of the roadway.

The recent heavy rain saturating the soil may be a contributing factor to the eucalyptus’ demise, though seeing these giants fall in the Park Presidio greenbelt is not that rare.

Large branches fell back in June and an enormous tree fell down at Funston and Clement in March.

  1. I heard the sound of it falling (I live nearby). I’m so thankful that no one was injured!

  2. Years ago, actually a couple of decades ago, I know a Transit Planner that had an interesting thought on PP Blvd. Her take was that the trees on PP Blvd were all way past their prime and would need to be replaced.

Her idea was to take out everything on PP Blvd. and to add soil in a terraced fashion to build up the center of each strip. Then place some walk/ride bridges over each street thus creating a separated guide way for pedestrians and bicyclists from GG Park to the Presidio. Then plant the terraced sections with the correct plant life to provide maximum sound attenuation to Funston and 14th Ave. There is actually a computer model for that.

I thought it was a great idea. If we moved the bus stops to cut outs as well, everything would work better. Traffic flow, pedestrian flow, better sound deadening, and new trees-bushes for the next 100 years.

One last benefit. All though races through the Richmond could happen without dumping onto the local streets with such a link between the Presidio and GG Park.

  3. JD–like this! Maybe it’s too common-sense practical for the Powers That Be (?).
