Happy Tuesday, Richmond District! Here are some local links to distract you from what you’re supposed to be doing…
- We came across the fun video above showing a Boy Scout troop parading down Geary Boulevard in 1961. What do you recognize?
- There’s a Richmond District neighborhood cleanup this Saturday from 9am until 1pm. Join the Department of Public Works at the kick-off at Washington High School (600 – 32nd Avenue) at 8:30am. Lunch will be provided for participants. Please bring appropriate clothing for working outside. Bringing a reusable water bottle is highly recommended. RSVP is required for lunch, please contact Jimmer.Cassiol@sfdpw.org.
- Outer Balboa is undergoing a transformation and the Examiner took notice recently with a nice article entitled “The renewal of Balboa Street in San Francisco’s Outer Richmond”. “Nestled within is a diversity of established businesses undergoing changes, along with some new modern, artsy cafes, bakeries, and restaurants.”
- Good news – fires will remain free on Ocean Beach. On the table was a proposal that bonfire permits go for $35 but after public outcry, it was rejected. According to SFist, “The agency will introduce a winter “rest” period, banning fires completely from November through February” to help with spare the air days. They will also be adding more fire rings to bring it to 16 total available on the beach. Now, keep it clean everyone so we don’t have to go through this again!
- After 10 years, the quirky, fun and extremely creative art gallery/studio called Frankenart Mart at 515 Balboa is closing. The art space, known for its inventive themes, community art collaborations and yes, hot dogs, is calling it quits after 10 years with a final “Dollar Comrade Blowout Sale”. “Everything must go! Come get dirt cheap art, art supplies, random crap, hot dog paraphernalia, frankenart memorabilia, total trash…” Sale on until Feb 28 when the space closes for good. From the owner:
- “It’s not possible to thank you enough for making the mart for these almost 10 years. This experiment has been the most amazing, magical, faith-inducing, mind-blowing thing I’ve ever been a part of, and it’s all because of you – frankenart particpants, witnesses, cheerleaders, questioners, neighbors, and passersby. You’ve made the magic of the mart and I am eternally grateful.”
A final celebration will take place on February 28 at 1pm.
I will miss Frankenmart but 10 years was a good, long run for this art project! I hope the Frankenmart artist / creator does other projects in the future.
I too will miss Frankenart Mart. I will miss stopping in on occasion and chatting with Leslie. I will miss the funkiness and quirkiness of the place. I will miss the incredibly friendly kittehs Zeke and Reuben.
The neighborhood is losing an old friend.
What is the reason Frankenart is closing? There’s no mention of this in the article.
@Roger – Because we don’t know, we did not say in the article.
We’ve stopped in a few times, but what my kids love the most is visiting the kitty’s, even if it is from behind glass. We’ll miss this place!
Another sign of the funk and unpretentious fun leaving SF.
Thanks for the head’s up. I too just like looking at the place.
