Work began last week on a new wall mural on the side of Ace Hardware at the corner of 3rd Avenue and Clement.
The project is a collaboration between The Clement Street Merchants Association, The San Francisco Arts Commission, Standard Plumbing Ace Hardware, The Richmond District YMCA, and Supervisor Eric Mar.
The mural’s artist is Jason Jagel, who was chosen out of hundred of possible artists according to Cynthia Huie of the Clement Street Merchants Assocation. Jagel’s work appears in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The UCLA Hammer Museum and the Portland Museum of Art, among others.
The mural is being funded by Supervisor Eric Mar’s office from a fund for neighborhood beautification, as well as by the San Francisco Arts Commission.

I’ve been watching the progress of this mural since they started working on it. I love the vibrant colors. What a nice addition to our neighborhood!
It would be great if someone could snap some photos of the artist at work, for posterity.
Sadly, art and murals are the predecessor to gentrification and displacement. Love art and paying jobs for artists, but warm and welcoming murals makes people who would otherwise overlook our sleepy corner of the city want to move in. Want proof, look at one of the most muralized hoods in the country, the Mission. People love their murals but not the people who painted them.
I just hope they finish with a top coat of anti-graffiti paint! There’s nothing worse on a wall than a formerly beautiful mural that’s been wrecked by vandals.

can someone explain the meaning of the mural and how its related to the nabe?
To me its seems like the mural represents community..it shows people interacting in a vibrant and colorful way. I’m tired of murals that are just a checklist of the demographic make up of a neighborhood…that would require only an illustrator, not an artist. In this one you can see that the artist presents non-specific elements, leaving it up to the viewer. Very smart. Really glad this is in the Inner Richmond.
Mimi – I completely agree!
When I look at the mural the green apple jumps out at me as a shout out to Green Apple Books, and the fog, well, the fog needs no explanation (Karl!).
How much does this increase the price of the houses on this block tho?
