Video: Mysterious, impromptu fireworks show in Outer Richmond last night

Reader Janna L. sent us this video of an unexpected fireworks show around 10:30pm on Sunday night in the outer Richmond. Janna shot the video from her window at 25th Ave and California.

Anyone know what this was for? We’d think it was Hardly Strictly Bluegrass but the last performer would have been long gone by that time…

  1. Someone in the area (~23rd between Lake and California) shoots of serious fireworks after every 4th of July, championship win, Chinese New Year, etc… I don’t know what the tie to last night was (Giants getting wildcard into the playoffs?). Normally I love fireworks, but living in a 100+ year old wood house so close together; not so much.

  2. Joe J is correct – my inconsiderate neighbors did this. The noise was very alarming at 10:30pm. These neighbors, college students, who get aggravated at life in general, also like to egg and tomato cars parked legally on the street outside where they live as well as have raging parties where their guests spray paint cars parked on the block. Then they swear and yell at us when we ask them about these things.

  3. Well I’m glad to learn it wasn’t gunshots. From where I was it was too loud to be firecrackers but I couldn’t be sure.

  4. Does anyone know the exact address of those responsible? This cannot be left alone, I want to see these fools arrested. These were serious fireworks very low to the ground in a heavily residential area, serious chance of fire or injury.

  5. Thanks to JOE J and RICHMOND MOM for cluing us all in on where the party central people of the Richmond District are at. When I’m in the mood to party I’ve got an idea of where to go.

  6. Last year the 4th of July fireworks reoccured every month until about April

  7. Richmond Mom, A house on my block (not disclosing) was rented to college students. They had four SFPD visits late at night in under two months. On the fifth visit police from USF joined SFPD on the call. By the beginning of the next month there was a tiny for rent sign posted in the front door glass, obviously by master tenant. My neighbor’s daughter who is in grad school and living with her Dad, called the number and found the master tenant was not interested in renting to non-USF students nor to persons of her gender. They’ve been quieter this semester.

  8. i heard booms, but didnt see the fireworks
i was hoping that it was the start of the zombie apocalypse….but no such luck

  9. Walt, I think the zombie apocalypse is actually in full swing – just didn’t have as dramatic an overture as you expected…

  10. Happens all the time at the beach. Luckily my dog is now hard of hearing. For her 1st 14 years, it would get her anxious and go beserk and me annoyed.

Long live the fireworks as long as my dog is deaf and don’t catch something on fire.

  11. I was wondering who made that noise the other night. Got me up in a heartbeat and out of a dead sleep.

I feel bad for the folks on 23rd. We lived on that section of block in the 1991 to 1997 time frame. Mike, Simba, Pete, Steven, Tony & Gloria, and don’t forget Sam & Margret! It was a great block.

I think that the best thing to do is to document any such behavior with video. Then send them a registered letter telling them what behavior you want them to stop. When they ignore you, and they will, then hit them with a $100 small claims court suit. Now what you do is get 10 neighbors on the block to sue them as well in small claims court. When they loose the fight and are on the hook for $1000 they will get quiet or move out. Nice thing about things like student loans…the money once it hits their savings or checking account can be attached….brains not brawn….

  12. I must live next to Janna L somewhere. I thought they were coming from my backyard area at 25th and Calif. or Rochambeau Playground, but I know they chain lock that at night. Scared the hell of out me….. I thought the first one was a small bomb going off

  13. Non-pro fireworks are illegal in SF. Small claims court is not a bad idea, especially since we have out of pocket expenses that pile up around July 4th (as well as the days leading up to and following July 4th), Bastille Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Giants win day, Giants lose day, Warriors win day, Warriors lose day, Chinese New Year, New Years day, and any unseasonably warm day that leads to warm nights. Tranquilizers for the terrified dog, extra laundry for bedding soiled by the terrified dog, gas used to drive the dog around at 1am, caffeine to placate mental anguish of all non-dogs in the house due to loss of sleep, and drugs to help non-dogs sleep, etc. Makes me worry for vets with PTSD. The Richmond is the wild west. And SFPD does nothing to enforce illegal use of fireworks.

  14. I’m out in the Outer Richmonnd and there’s a few neighbors who also set off elaborate non-pro fireworks from their respective backyards, which seems incredibly dangerous. It’s hard on our two cats especially, but thankfully fireworks are the extent of this type of activity. So far we haven’t had any problems with rude and rowdy students
