The contest called for submissions of artwork that “represent the unique aspects of the district and community” to wrap the large, 5 foot by 5 foot boxes.
Reader Kaywood H. sent us this picture of the box at 1 15th Avenue near the Presidio gate, showing the winning design. The work depicts some neighborhood landmarks including the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, House of Tofu restaurant, the Golden Gate Bridge and some typical architecture.
We’re not sure of the artist and were unable to find anything online, so if you know who gets credit for this fine wrapping job, let us know in the comments.
According to the contest rules, the winner’s design should be appearing on all ten utility boxes that are in the Richmond District. So keep an eye out!
UPDATE 10/23/18: The artist is Eddie Ahn, a Richmond District resident who also designed some of the artwork for the One Richmond campaign

Coffee House? That’s Jack in the Box next to Tofu House. C’mon bro.
Hey Sarah- We will send you the press release. The illustration represents hundreds of hours of work by Richmond District resident and cartoonist Eddie Ahn. As part of a pilot project to decorate AT&T utility boxes in the Richmond District, Excelsior and Castro districts, the ten 4-foot-tall utility boxes of the Richmond District will be wrapped in vinyl that features neighborhood landmarks, fun character stories, and animals of the neighborhood. This art project also supports One Richmond, an identity developed by residents of the Richmond to unify our community and to cultivate neighborhood pride centered on inclusion, taking care of one another, taking care of the Richmond, and supporting our local businesses. We will have an event this Friday to unveil the box- https://www.facebook.com/events/1737825002995501/
@WTF that’s a cameo location and character from the artist’s comic – sidewalk empire.
Who wants a jack in the box on a collection of popular Richmond locations and icons??
I saw it yesterday – it looks great! Definitely an improvement!
Utility box at 26th ave and California is so ugly, I have to share my anti-depressants with it. Please, somebody add some color to it!
