Mapping our neighborhood’s history

The Western Neighborhood Project (WNP) is a nonprofit organization formed in 1999 to preserve and share the history and culture of the neighborhoods in western San Francisco.

The organization has a great website at outsidelands.org that is full of articles, interviews and photos that document our neighborhood’s history. I’ve featured a lot of their material here on the blog.

Recently, they put out a call for help with mapping their historical images and articles, all 2000 of them. Their mission is to provide a complete map with each photo and article designated by its location in the western part of San Francisco. That way, visitors can more easily hone in on the history of their neighborhood, even their very block.

Check out the map here; as of this writing they’ve plotted 210 items. Just click a teardrop to view the article or photo.

To help the WNP with this mapping effort, send them a message via their contact page to let them know you’re interested. Don’t worry – it’s work you can do right from your home computer, in your pajamas if you prefer. 😉
