SF Streetblogs reported on Friday about problems with the new sidewalk curb ramps installed along Park Presidio Boulevard.
According to the article, the space between the asphalt and the start of the curb were filled in using temporary materials that has resulted in uneven pavement.
“While a minor difference in grade may not appear to be a problem for most pedestrians, it is a major burden for visually and mobility impaired users trying to access bus stops along Park Presidio and its cross streets. At the least it’s an unacceptably sloppy job, [and] the new curb ramps could be in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).”
The Dept. of Public Works hired W. Bradley Electric for the project, who then subcontracted the curb work to Ghilotti Brothers, Inc. Ghilotti had some other issues during the project, including not following directions when they were told, for the purpose of pedestrian safety, to only do alternate diagonal corners at each intersection.
It’s not known at this time when the contractors will return to fill in the permanent hot patch asphalt in these gaps. This is needed to finally smooth out the transition from road to ramp. The entire stretch of Park Presidio Boulevard (e.g. from Lake Street out to SF State) is going through these upgrades until the summer of 2010.
