Police Blotter – June 19, 2009

CAPTAIN RICHARD CORREIA’S MESSAGE
During the Month of May 2009 there were 16 robberies and 32 burglaries in the District. Robberies are up 4 over the previous month’s total and burglaries are up 2. The three month trend line for auto burglaries is sloping downward with 87 in March, 92 in April and 59 in May. Please keep calling when you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood.

So far this year there have been 125 traffic collisions that resulted in injury in the District, including 18 in the month of May. In May Richmond Station officers issued 1102 citations for moving violations, and made 9 arrests for DUI.

At the Mothers Against Driving Awards Luncheon today Richmond Station Officer Alvaro Schor was recognized as San Francisco’s Top DUI arresting officer in 2008. Officer Schor made 45 DUI arrests in 2008.

During the month of May 2009 Richmond Station Officers handled 6,132 radio calls for service, an increase of 625 over April 2008. Richmond’s May 2009 calls were classified as follows: 302 Priority “A” emergency calls, 723 Priority “B” urgent calls and 5,107 Priority “C” routine calls. Our average response time for Priority “A” emergency calls was three minutes and seventeen seconds.

NOTEWORTHY ARRESTS
On 06/11/ 09 at 7:25 PM officers responded to Broderick Street and Post regarding an aggravated assault. A juvenile victim, sitting on a bench, was verbally harassed and then kicked on the right side of the face, causing a tooth filling to become dislodged. The suspect, also a juvenile, was positively identified by the victim and was arrested and booked for multiple charges.

On 06/12/09 at 12:15 AM officers responded to the 3200 Block of Balboa Street regarding a of a domestic violence incident. A known male suspect was detained and arrested for False Imprisonment and Battery.

On 06/12/09 at 3:43 AM a vehicle was stopped for a malfunctioning brake light at the intersection of 8th Avenue and Fulton Street. During a computer check officers discovered that the driver had an expired license. The driver was cited and the vehicle was towed.

On 06/13/09 at 2:49 AM officer’s responded to a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a tree at the intersection of Parker Avenue and Golden Gate Avenue. USF officers were at the scene and had detained the driver of the vehicle. A USF Officer had extinguished a fire in the engine compartment. A witness present at the scene told the SFPD investigating officers that the vehicle ran the stop sign at the intersection and then struck the tree. Further investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle appeared to have been driving under the influence. The driver was arrested then treated at a local hospital for injuries he had sustained in the collision.

On 06/13/09 at 9:35 PM a vehicle was stopped for failing to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Fillmore Street and Jackson Street. A computer check revealed that the driver had an expired license. The driver was cited and the vehicle was towed.

On 06/14/09 at 11:05 AM a vehicle was stopped on the 300 block of 22nd Avenue for having expired vehicle registration and no front license plate. A computer check revealed that the driver had a suspended license. The driver was cited and the vehicle was towed.

On 06/15/09 at 9:00 AM officers responded to the 300 block of 19th Avenue regarding a trespasser. They encountered an intoxicated and belligerent suspect that had vandalized an apartment unit that her friend had recently vacated. The suspect was arrested and booked for trespassing and vandalism.

On 06/15/09 at 5:38 PM a driver was stopped at the intersection of Geary Boulevard and 7th Avenue for operating a vehicle while using a cell phone without a hands-free device. A computer check revealed that the driver had a suspended license. The driver was cited and the vehicle was towed.

On 06/16/09 at 5:24 PM officers responded to the 3700 block of Geary Boulevard regarding a report of a fraud in progress. Two female suspects attempted to purchase merchandise using stolen checks and false identifications. The cashier noticed considerable inconsistencies between the physical attributes described on the identifications and the appearance of the suspects. The cashier notified the store manager and the police was called. Further investigation revealed numerous properties in the suspects’ possession that did not appear to belong to them, including property related to a recent auto burglary. The two suspects were arrested and booked for multiple felony charges.

On 06/17/09 at 8:27 PM officers responded to the area of 19th Avenue and Balboa Street regarding a report of an auto burglary in progress. Witnesses heard a “bang” from the street and when they looked out the window, they saw a male suspect entering a truck that had a broken window. The owner of the truck and the witnesses confronted the suspect. The suspect was attempting to start the truck when confronted. The suspect took a combative stance as if to fight just as the police arrived. The suspect was arrested and booked for multiple felony charges.

On 06/17/09 at 10:38 PM officers observed a double-parked vehicle on Clement Street at 5th Avenue. As the contact officer was issuing a citation, the owner of the vehicle came out of one of the businesses in the area. A computer check on the owner of the vehicle revealed that the owner had an outstanding warrant out of San Mateo County. The officers placed the suspect under arrest and transported him to the county jail where he was booked.

NOTEWORTHY INCIDENTS
On 06/13/09 at 9:00 AM a victim walked into Richmond Station to report a fraud incident. The victim stated that she responded to a job posting on “craigslist” for a “secret shopper position that entailed receiving newly purchased money orders in the mail, cashing them, and forwarding them to another location through the mail. As payment, the employee would then receive $200.00 for each successful transaction. The victim responded to the ad and was immediately contacted by an unknown perpetrator. The victim received two “Money Grams” in the mail in which she cashed at her bank and then purchased a Western Union money order and sent it to an address that was given to her. The victim received another two money orders in the mail in which she cashed and later purchased a Western Union money order and sent it to the same recipient as the first. The victim received a third set of two money orders in the mail, however, when she tried to cash them, the bank informed her that the money orders she was trying cash were fraudulent.

On 06/13/09 at 3:50 AM a victim was awakened by two unknown suspects who broke in to his house at the 2800 block of Golden Gate Avenue. The victim took a baseball bat and chased the startled suspects out of his house. The suspects ran towards the open front door and knocked the victim to the wall as they fled. The suspects were last seen headed northbound on Arguello Boulevard. The loss was a laptop computer.

On 06/15/09 at 11:00 AM officers responded to Wood Street and Geary Boulevard regarding a robbery with a gun. The victims were approached by two suspects who brandished a gun and demanded the victims’ purse and wallet. The suspects fled in a red 2-door 1990’s Ford Mustang LX southbound on Wood Street to eastbound Anza Street. A witness observed one of the suspects toss something out of the vehicle. The witness informed the victims’ and it was discovered that the item discarded from the vehicle was one of the victims’ wallet. Officers searched the immediate area for the suspects with negative results.

On 06/16/09 at 4:24 AM officers responded to the 300 block of 8th Avenue regarding a report of a man with a gun. The victims were threatened by two known suspects. Suspect one brandished a gun and yelled out expletives and threats to harm the victims. Both suspects fled northbound on 8th Avenue in a black Chevy Silverado. The victims stated that the two suspects were possibly involved in a similar incident in the Taraval District that involved one of the victims’ family members.
