A new mural was just completed on the exterior wall of Frank McCoppin Elementary School, located on 6th Avenue near Balboa.
The mural has an Asian-American theme, and was the result of a collaboration between the school and the Asian American Womens Artist Assocation, whose mission is to advance the visibility and recognition of Asian American women in the arts. The AAWAA held a community workshop in Summer 2017 to get community input on the McCoppin mural.
The mural was designed by artist Erin Yoshi. According to her website, “her artwork is a reflection of her journey through the contradictions of life amplifying the beautiful, the raw, and the downright ugly. The work is rooted in her historic cultural memories and informed by current global conditions. She uses her creative practice to inspire, engage and transform space. Yoshi’s work encompasses abstract color vibrations with figurative storytelling. Through her practice, she strives to create hope and lines of camaraderie.”
Yoshi has created murals in Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, the Philippines, Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, the Netherlands and across the United States.
We have an email into the artist to find out more about the McCoppin mural design and concept. We’ll add to the story when we know more!
