Jersey’s opens on 6th Avenue offering east coast style sandwiches

Jersey’s owners Shannon Gnatek and Erick Morton

I stopped in Jersey’s yesterday, a new sandwich shop that opened up at 200 6th Avenue, right near the corner of Cornwall (near California). The storefront is tucked behind the bus shelter and was the former home of the Halfway Cafe.

Jersey’s is tiny inside but boasts a good size menu full of sandwich classics like Roast Beef, Turkey Club, Hot Pastrami, Reuben and Spicy Meatball. For vegetarians, the ‘Shroom sandwich is a good option, offering grilled, marinated portabello mushrooms, goat cheese, roasted red peppers and basil pesto on foccacia.

Jersey’s also offer a small brunch menu on the weekends that includes bagels, an egg sandwich and a breakfast burrito. The shop also offers event catering. And for those with a penchant for coffee, they serve Illy’s.

Jersey’s is owned by married couple Erick Morton (originally from New Jersey) and Shannon Gnatek, who have both logged years in the restaurant business as bartenders and servers. It’s the first food business that they’ve owned and judging by the volume of business in their first week, Jersey’s is off to a great start.

“We served 90 sandwiches out of here yesterday – in 3 hours!” Erick said.

Thanks to writeups on local blogs like Grubstreet, Jersey’s is drawing a lot of people who are looking for a good ol’ American sandwich, something which can be hard to find in the Richmond District.

“I felt we were missing a good sandwich shop in the neighborhood,” Erick said. He and his wife live at Presidio and Geary and in part, it was his frustration at never being able to find a good roast beef sandwich that motivated him to open Jersey’s.

Erick counts the roast beef sandwich as his favorite menu item; for Shannon it’s the Turkey Reuben. All the sandwiches are prepared with fresh bread and meats, and heated by request.

A really good sandwich takes time, and Erick says they’ve been learning every day how to make the business more efficient to handle the crowds. By Saturday, they were handing out tickets with times on them to help manage customer’s expectations about when their order would be ready.

So Richmond District residents, get into Jersey’s while you can to try out their sandwiches. We may have the next Ike’s on our hands! 😉 They’re open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11am until 8pm, 9am to 5pm on the weekends (closed Tuesdays).

Congratulations to Erick and Shannon on opening. Welcome to the neighborhood!

  1. Sounds great and I look forward to trying some of their sandwiches.

But I take issue with the comment that our neighborhood is lacking in the sandwich department… Toy Boat, Blue Danube and Cafe la Flore make decent sandwiches, and we’ve got some great Vietnamese sandwiches in the neighborhood, too.

  2. I’ve hoped for a great sandwich counter in the Richmond for some time! But for the prices on Jersey’s menu board, I’ll have to stick with A K Meats deli. They have pretty decent sandwiches (with fresh, natural meats) for $6.

Times are tough when a guy can’t afford to try a new sandwich.

  3. Try Lou’s on Geary an 15th… Great sandwiches and soups. Nice expresso machine and the breakfast sandwich is awesome. They are a west coast sandwich and they rock the giants colors. Also they have a stamp card..

  4. Agree on Lou’s but let’s not count out Freddy’s Deli on La Playa

  5. I live practically next door, but man– pricy! When you can get some great Vietnamese sandwiches a block down for $4, I doubt I’ll be eating here often.

  6. I will definitely check this place out. $10.00 for a turkey club is steep. Let’s not forget the great sandwich shops in the neighborhood such as Lou’s and Arguello Market!

  7. As an East Coast boy, I can’t wait to try the hot pastrami sandwich. There are precious few places in this city that know how to to make an actual hot pastrami sandwich. That said, AK Meats has great sandwiches as well, hot pastrami included!

  8. I had the meatball sandwich- nice and perfect for a rainy day and they made the meatballs from scratch- it was delicious!!!! I’m craving another one, they also have chips drinks.tea, coffee

  9. I am glad others pointed out how overpriced the menu appears to be. Cafe la Flore’s sandwiches are BOMB.com and are extremely reasonably priced..

  10. I’ll believe it when I see it. I’ve not found one sandwich worthy of the name in this city (and don’t get me started on my sorry hunt for a breakfast sandwich, or having to explain what a “hard roll” is to people).

If it’s good they got a customer. But I’ll slate ’em if it’s not. 😀

    Signed,

    East Coast Refugee/Sandwich-Lover

  11. Great news! AK builds a nice sandwich and they always remember my order even when I haven’t been there in months but I’ve found nothing else decent in the ‘hood. Regarding the supposed high prices — you get what you pay for. Quality ingredients are expensive and no one is getting rich off a sandwich shop in SF. I am more than willing to pay to know that I’m fueling up with clean food. God knows what you’re putting into your body with those cheapie sandwiches.

  12. I just had their roast beef sandwich and it was really, really good. They roast the meat themselves and it comes on fresh baked bread. Several people have commented on the prices–yes, they are a little higher than average sandwich shops, but there is a reason for that–they are much better! I think it’s one of the best sandwich places in the whole city.

  13. east coast sandwiches at east coast prices…..do fries go with my shake?
    welcome to the hood

  14. That ain’t no east coast price! You know where to go an eye-talian sub is available easy $5. Remember, it’s only expensive if you don’t know where to buy it. 😉

Also I examined the menu: I call foul. They have a breakfast burrito. Try finding THAT in the Northeast! (Yes, we call it the Northeast).
