Funeral procession

This procession worked its way up California Street on Saturday afternoon, complete with a marching band (while I video’d they were only playing the drums though). They were carrying a picture of a Chinese man as they passed.

  1. Thanks for recognizing this. This was my grandfather’s funeral. It was a long and windy walk.

  2. @ray – Thanks for leaving a comment, my condolences on your loss. If you’d like to tell us more about your grandfather and/or the procession, please do.

  3. A funeral procession such as this was a common sight in Chinatown in the past. Nice to see that traditions such as this are continuing in the Richmond.

My condolences to Ray on the passing of his grandfather.

  4. Where should I start. My grandfather came a long way from having to survive on his own at a very young age without parents to surviving the Civil Wars in China during the 1930s. He eventually married and had 5 sons and 1 daughter. He was truly a magnificent man with many skills, from cooking for the family, farming, to wood-working. I am very honored to have known him and am no way close to the person he was.

@Linda – It’s is so true, you hardly see funeral processions like this anymore. Our family believes a lot in showing our respect to our deceased. Call us old-fashioned but some traditions shouldn’t change.
