I received an update on the giant eucalyptus that fell last week from Lin-Shao Chin, a legislative assistant in Supervisor Eric Mar’s office. Here’s what her email said:
——————————————–
On Wednesday, July 15 at 5:30 PM, a fifty foot tall Blue Gum Eucalyptus came down at the corner of Funston and Clement crushing two cars. The tree had a 28 inch diameter trunk, and was hazard-rated at 11 (the highest) by San Francisco Recreation and Park Department. Since the incident, the Department of Public Works (DPW) was able to swiftly remove the root ball as well as the rest of the fallen tree.
We are glad to say that no one was hurt, and hope to prevent accidents like this from happening in the future. Many trees do pose a danger to public safety, which is why removal and reforestation are necessary. In September, Rec and Park will begin the removal and pruning of hazardous trees. Our office has been advocating with community members for the funding of the projects. Once the removals are finished, the process of reforestation will begin sometime between October and November.
Thank you to the residents in this group for reporting and photographing the fallen tree. I’d also like to acknowledge Rec&Park Urban Forestry Crew for their swift response in removing the fallen tree and root ball. Rec & Park’s Tree crew, Heavy Equipment crew and Park Patrol were on scene for the entire removal. They finished their work at 10pm that evening.

Thanks for the update Lin-Shao!
