More auto arson attacks – including two in Richmond

There’s been a spree of auto arsons across the city that began this weekend, with the latest incidents taking place in the Richmond District.

Early this morning, someone tried to set fire to Mike Schwinn’s 2001 Ford F-150 truck on the 400 block of 29th Avenue here in the Richmond District, which he uses for work as a contractor for Veterans Electric. But someone noticed a newspaper on fire underneath his right rear tire and put it out.

“It received no damage. It’s got a little charring underneath,” Schwinn, 57, said after surveying the damage. “I’m not angry. I’m disturbed that there’s some idiot doing this to people.” Asked if he had a message for the arsonist, Schwinn said, “Don’t let me catch you.”

The Chronicle reports that there was another car fire at 48th Avenue and Geary early today.

These latest incidents follow a series of five auto arsons that took place over the weekend. Police say it is too soon to determine whether today’s incidents are connected to any of the other car fires.
