The art of the donut

Donuts – the food we hate to love. We groan when co-workers bring in a flat of Krispy Kremes to the office, but then squeal with delight as we pinch luscious pieces into our mouth. Why oh why does something so tasty have to be so bad for us?

Local artist Jay Mercado has taken the donut to another level – that of fine art. This Saturday he’s hosting a “Donut Art Exhibit” at his studio at 4754 California Street @ 10th Avenue (11am – 6pm).

Stop by to check out his series of paintings “celebrating the beloved and maligned donut”. He promises all varieties, shapes and sizes by the dozen.

And he’s not kidding. Just check out his fun blog which is full of charming portraits of donuts. French ones, chocolate glazed classics, even donuts painted on car hoods.

And if the artsy donuts at Jay’s studio don’t tempt you, you can always head up one block to Clement & 10th to chomp on the real deal.
