Police Blotter – September 18, 2009

CAPTAIN RICHARD CORREIA’S MESSAGE
A person came to the Station’s the other evening to make a report, and I happened to be at the front counter. They asked me if we were open for business and at what time did we stop patrolling. I reminded them that we operate around the clock and never close.

Last night at 3:00 AM officers were patrolling on 30th Avenue and Anza Street. Being mindful of recent burglaries and auto break-ins in the area, the officers stopped to talk to a suspicious person. The individual dissembled and very quickly his claim of legitimate business in the neighborhood fell apart. The officers learned that the individual was a felon on probation with a history of burglary and auto break-ins. In fact the individual had an arrest record that included nineteen felonies and twenty misdemeanors. During a search pursuant to a condition of the person’s probation officers located an array of burglar tools, including a flashlight, keys, metal files, tweezers and saws. He was arrested for possession of burglar tools and a probation violation. This is good police work by our midnight officers. They captured a career criminal who was lurking about in a residential area in the middle of the night intent on committing a crime.

During the past week, there were 20 traffic accidents, 3 involving injuries, and 1 DUI arrest. There were 6 citations issued for driving without a license or driving on a suspended license.

NOTEWORTHY ARRESTS
On 09/13/09 at 1:10am SFFD Medics and an SFFD engine responded to the 2500 block of Sutter on a medical call. When the paramedic tried to bring in medical equipment to treat the patient, another tenant blocked his way. The tenant was told to move several times but refused. The tenant then grabbed the paramedic by both wrists and would not let go. After a brief struggle, members of fire department helped hold the male down until the police arrived. The 41 year old male was charged with battery.

On 09/15/09 at 12:37pm officers responded to 600 block of 44th Avenue on a call of a male running around naked and possibly under the influence of a narcotic. Officers were directed to a specific residence by witnesses and officers observed blood drops on the stairs. They located the male inside the home with numerous lacerations to his body. Also discovered a marijuana grow in the house. The 30 year old male was transported to the hospital for treatment for his injuries and then charged with cultivation of marijuana.

On 09/15/09 at 10:15pm officers responded to the 300 block of Funston on a report panhandler who threatened to slash all the tires in the neighborhood when persons did not make donations. The male was located and originally gave a false name to the officers. Through an investigation his true identity was revealed and officers discovered he had 2 outstanding warrants for his arrest from Santa Clara County. Prior to being transported to the county jail, the suspect needed to be medically cleared at a local hospital for a previous injury. As the officers were escorting the male from the x-ray room back to the exam room, he threw his shoulder into one of the officers knocking him off balance. In addition to the two warrants, the 46 year old male was also charged with battery on a police officer.

On 09/17/09 at 9:10am officers were called to the 800 block of La Playa on a report of an attempted robbery. Plainclothes officers were in the area and located the suspect. Officers determined that the suspect approached a woman as she exited a store. He swore at her and called her vulgar names and tried to take the soda she had just purchased from her hands. She then ran back into the store and the suspect threatened to harm her if she called the police. The suspect, a 38 year old male was charged with threats and attempted robbery.

On 09/18/09 at 3:14am officers were patrolling the area of Washington High School due to several burglaries that had occurred since August. Officers observed the suspect walking on 30th Ave towards Anza wearing all dark clothes and a carrying a large black backpack. They stopped to speak with the suspect and it was determined he was on probation for burglary. In the backpack Officers located master keys, pick bars, metal files and other burglar tools. The male, a 38 year old was charged with being in possession of burglar tools and a probation violation.

NOTEWORTHY INCIDENTS
On 09/11/09 at 7:25pm a suspect entered a business on the 2400 block of Balboa Street armed with a gun. The suspect told the two victims that “This is a robbery” and that he would shoot them. He then took money and fled out of the store in an unknown direction. The male was wearing a dark shirt wrapped around his face, a dark vest and blue jeans.

On 09/11/09 at 8:17pm victims were walking west on the 2600 block of California Street. They heard someone running up from behind them and they turned around. Two male suspects tackled the victims to the ground and tried to take their purses. One of the victims tried to hold on to hers and was punched in the head until she let go. The second suspect took the other victim’s purse and they both fled south on Pierce Street. A witness nearby heard the screams and saw two males running from the scene, south on Pierce Street and get onto bicycles. The suspects were both wearing black hooded sweatshirts and black jeans. The victims refused medical treatment.

On 09/14/09 between 6:30am and 10:55pm on the 300 block of 10th Avenue a suspect entered an apartment by climbing a fire escape and entering through a window. Once inside the suspect took cash.

On 09/14 between 8:00am and 5:30pm a suspect entered an apartment by climbing scaffolding that had been placed on the building. Once inside the apartment the suspect took jewelry, a laptop and a video game system.

On 09/15/09 at 11:30am a victim a 79 year old male walked by the bus stop at 38th Avenue and Fulton, and saw a suspect standing there. The suspect stopped the victim and told him he was looking for a church as he had received an inheritance and wanted to donate money. While discussing this, a second suspect approached and joined the conversation. The victim, unaware that the suspects were acting in concert, accepted an invitation to go with suspects in a vehicle to find a church. While driving around, the one suspect showed the victim a satchel of money that was his “inheritance” and asked the victim and the second male to show their money. They drove to the area of 19th and Geary where the one suspect was to withdraw a sum of money from his bank account. When the suspect returned, the victim went to his bank and withdrew a large amount of money. The logical rational for the victim to obtain cash from is account was convoluted; however, the outcome was that he was ultimately to leave the vehicle with more money then he had obtained from his bank. The suspects dropped the victim off back at the bus stop after giving him a satchel of “money”. They departed and the victims opened the satchel and found newspaper. Loss: $14,000.00.

Between 09/16/09 6:00pm and 06/17/09 at 7:15am on the 600 block of 32nd Avenue a suspect gained entry into the school and was able to access three locked classrooms. The rooms were vandalized and papers scattered throughout. One of the classrooms had some items taken.

On 09/16/09 at 9:30pm a victim was walking on north on 19th Avenue from Fulton Street. He noticed two males fall in behind him and follow him down the block. He finally turned around and asked the suspects what they wanted. One of the suspects then took out a handgun and pointed it at the victim, telling him to give up all his property. The victim handed over his bag which contained his laptop, cell phone and wallet. The suspect then fled to an awaiting vehicle parked north of them and fled the area. The suspects were described as males in their late teens, early 20’s wearing black hooded sweatshirts and the vehicle was a four door sedan.

On 09/17/09 at 6:30am the victim was walking north on 42nd Ave towards Geary Bl. She noticed a white vehicle drive past her, northbound, then make a u-turn and come back. The vehicle stopped and two suspects exited and approached the victim. One of the suspects had a gun in his hand and told the victim that she was going to have to give up her purse. The victim gave up her bag and the suspect ran back to their vehicle and fled south. The suspects were described as two males in their early 20’s wearing black hooded sweatshirts. The vehicle was described as a white, 2-door Japanese make.

On 09/17/09, between 8:00am and 5:00pm, on the 4600 block of Cabrillo, a suspect entered into a residence by prying open the front metal gate. The suspect took a camera, jewelry and laptop.
