In today’s edition, SF Chronicle food critic Michael Bauer reviews our local french bistro, Chapeau. As you may recall, Chapeau used to be located near Clement and 14th Avenue but recently took over its sister location at 126 Clement Street. The good news is that though the location may have changed, the same great food and service has not.
Bauer’s review focuses heavily on the atmosphere of the popular restaurant, giving kudos to owner Philippe Gardelle for greeting customers warmly, mingling with patrons, and most importantly, Gardelle “continues to create rich sauces for his meat and make creamy bisques and loads of flaky puff pastries”.
Gardelle started Chapeau in 1996 and has built a reputation as one of the best French restaurants in San Francisco. All without putting too big a dent in your wallet. Bauer compliments Chapeau’s stylish environment and food, and says “Few main courses bump above $25; a three-course menu is $38, and a four-course menu is $46.”

Whoa, I read that as .75 stars at first – that would have been a major dis.
Three out of four – that’s much better
Good for Phillipe and Ellen! They are Richmond residents as well. They deserve it by providing downtown/world class quality food in a neighborhood setting with neighborhood prices.
Anyone know what will happen to the old Chapeau on Clement and 15th?
LOL @ Jim – fair point! I’ve updated the title of the post.
