And the tees keep on coming…

RichmondSFBlog reader Andy sent me a note last week and said:

I live here in the outer Richmond and I was upset over our lack of neighborhood swag, so I went ahead and made a T-Shirt.

Not only did he make a shirt, but it’s a nice one too! Pictured at right, the shirt says:

The Richmond District
Annexed 1848 – Founded 1866
In Fog We Trust
San Francisco

You can buy Andy’s t-shirt on zazzle.com, which lets you choose from dozens of t-shirt styles and colors (sweatshirts too). Prices begin around $23.

Thanks Andy for making sure Richmond residents can look their best when they’re out and about. 🙂

  1. How exactly can it be annexed years before it was even founded?

  2. Hi Chris,

Going off the information available here on the site:

In the 1800s, what is now the Richmond District was known as the “Outside Lands”, mostly because the actual land was comprised of sand dunes and was considered way outside of the city itself. Originally this area of the city was owned by Mexico, then annexed by the U.S. in 1848, and officially made part of San Francisco in 1866.

I felt that the dates between the land being Annexed by the USA and then Founded, ie: taken in and officially made part of the city of San Francisco, was worth distinguishing. I guess it ultimately depends on how you want to define “Found”.

  3. very cool.

plus there was a period of time where there was the City of SF, and parts of what is now the City were still part of the COUNTY of SF, since so few people lived out here back then. It didn’t last long, but still you can see maps that make this distinction.

  4. As a proud resident of the Outer Richmond, I love this t-shirt! It’s a great design and I love the history behind the annexation/founding. Thanks for designing us a shirt, Andy!

  5. I felt that it was time to celebrate our neighborhood with a little style. Thanks again to the Richmond Blog and everyone out there working to make this an even better place to live!
