CAPTAIN KEITH SANFORD’S MESSAGE
“National Night Out” was a great success with Irina Chatsova and Morgan from SAFE working with us at Richmond Police Station. My advisory board consisting of President Patrice Motley, Stuart Williams, Sue Fry, Edmund Lee, Jean Barish, and John Ela were extremely helpful in getting out the information and being participatory. Lt. M. Moore, who I put in charge of Richmond Station’s responsibilities for the evening event, outdid herself. Over 200 hamburger and 200 hotdogs were fed to community members, business members, kids and officers!! Lt. Moore working with our staff team of Sgt. S. Long and Officer T. Yee provided refreshments, face painting, chalk drawing, photographs and balloons. SFFD Fire Engine, SFPD Mounted Unit and SFPD Motorcycle also joined us.

David Heller (President of the Geary Blvd. Merchants Assoc.) was in attendance, assisting us in getting business members at the event. SAN (Richmond District) J. Lynch was in attendance and brought numerous attendees with her, who were most interactive! Ex-49er Eric Wright #21 brought in Ernie Co (Ex SFPD) and they provided 200 tasty chickens, and salad for the event! Eric Wright also signed 49er baseball hats for the kids and took photographs with just about everyone. A big thank you to our SFPD Community Relations Unit, Captain S. Ferrigno and TARGET for assisting us too! We were pleased to have Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, Supervisor Eric Mar and SFPD Commanders M. Ali, S. Tong and L. Militello. Dolly, Richmond Station’s secretary did a wonderful job of making all our rooms comfortable for all the attendees too! We look forward to next years, “National Night Out”!!

This weekend we had the annual event, “Outside Lands”. Over 60,000 attendees were present for each of the three days of music and festivities. Lt. A. Borges, Sgt. Long, Officers T. Moore, J. Noto and F. Feliciano were my staff that oversaw the complete event. The staff performed in an excellent manner with wonderful results in policing the event. The officers who participated in the “Outside Lands” event conducted themselves in a most professional demeanor which reflected positively on the San Francisco Police Department! I would like to thank all members of the community, business members, city agencies and the “Outside Lands” management and staff for a great event. Martha Cohen was again a pleasure to work with on this event.

Within the past week, Chief G. Suhr transferred one Solo Motorcycle Police Sergeant and three additional Solo Motorcycle Officers to Richmond Police Station, in an effort to enhance our traffic enforcement in the district. Sgt. J. Fewer will oversee these officers and assign them to problematic areas throughout the Richmond District.

Our Police Community Relations Forum (PCRF) meeting which is held every third Tuesday of the will now be at both 1:00pm and 7:00pm to accommodate as many community members as possible. Our 7pm meeting for tonight has been changed to 6pm at the Hall of Flowers (9th Ave/Lincoln). Chief G. Suhr will be the speaker, on the topic of “Community Policing”. Captain D. O’Leary from Park Station, Captain C. Lum from Taraval Station and I will be in attendance. I look forward to members of the Richmond District attending and participating in this venue with the other district station police captains and Chief G. Suhr.

The Police Commission Meeting will be hosted by the members of the Richmond Police Station on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 6pm. It will be held at Roosevelt Middle School, 460 Arguello Blvd.

NOTEWORTHY ARRESTS
On 08/09 at 2:30pm, a representative in charge of a vacant home on the 3200 block of Jackson contacted the police regarding a person who moved into the home illegally. Officers contacted the suspect as he returned to the property. When the officers attempted to speak to the male, he refused to stop and told the officer to “Shut up.” The male continued up the stairs and ignored the officer who repeatedly told the suspect to stop as he needed to investigate the trespassing incident. The male swore at the officer and told him that he had permission from the FBI to be on the premise. The officer attempted to detain the suspect who resisted the officer and ran away. The officer caught up several houses away and the suspect turned and took a fighting stance and advanced towards the officer. Several other officers arrived on scene and assisted in detained the 34 year old male. The male was charged with trespassing and resisting arrest.

On 08/12 at 1:30am, officers on patrol in the area of the 3900 block of Geary, observed an altercation, with one male being pushed. When the officers investigated it was determined that a bouncer at a nearby bar had escorted out a drunk and belligerent male. When they were outside the suspect pulled a knife on the bouncer and a shoving match ensued. The owner of the bar came out to help and separate the two. At some point someone yelled “watch out he has a knife” and the owner discovered several cut to his arm. The 29 year old male was charged with aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

  1. Strange absence of the “suspects” nationality, a common theme these days. By knowing the suspects nationality, it gives a much clearer idea of who to watch for say if the crime happened in your neighborhood, and even possibly help in his capture. Actually, in one sense by not telling the nationality, it puts others in danger. It has nothing to do with anything racial, facts are facts.

  2. Hi Gary – You should contact the Richmond District Police station, or even Captain Sanford (Keith.Sanford@sfgov.org) directly with your suggestion. They publish the blotter which we then republish, so the omissions happen on their end.

  3. I have issues regarding OL — but I have nothing but the highest praise for Another Planet (producers of Outside Lands concert) and the SFPD plan and manage this event.

Think of all the things that could go wrong when you have 60,000 people a day coming in and out of a quiet residential neighborhood for an 11-hour event…

…yet on any of those three days (and I was on JFK and Fulton Street right in the heart of it at various times all three days, sometimes multiple times during the day) in the midst of the concert, there was hardly anyone on JFK drive…the vibe was happy, relaxed…

That takes a lot of work — and the right attitude which has to come from the top down.

So thanks to Chief Suhr, Capt. Sanford and all the SFPD for knowing exactly how to give off the vibe that they want everyone there to have a good time — and that having a good time doesn’t include violence, damaging property, etc.

THEY always seem to be having a good time — maybe that’s the key?!
